Coach: Rich Rodriguez
2008 Record: 3-9

The Maize and Blue had a season in 2008 that every Wolverines fan wants to put behind them. One of the most prestigious programs in the NCAA faced a tremendous amount of hiccups under RichRod’s new system and the team simply didn’t have the right personnel for success.

The transition shouldn’t happen overnight in Ann Arbor, but Rodriguez has brought in his own recruits and 2009 should be a step in the right direction for a throng of very demanding fans and boosters. sportsbook prefootball 250x250 mybanner1 2009 Michigan Wolverines Gambling Odds

Freshman Tate Forcier should win the QB job; he is battling fellow frosh Denard Robinson and junior Nick Sheridan. Forcier seems to have a better grasp of the offense than Robinson, and Sheridan, frankly, sucks. The offense should be more effective and less turnover-prone with a glut of sophomores instead of freshman this season. There is the Michigan athleticism you should expect on defense.

The highlight would likely be senior DE Brandon Graham.

Team Strengths
The team can’t get much worse. The offensive line returns intact and their back-ups are, for the most part, highly-touted recruits. The receiving corps has playmaking ability in Martavious Odoms, Darryl Stonum and Greg Mathews. The running backs are deep and talented and I don’t believe senior Brandon Minor gets enough props. The two starting corners, Donovan Warren and Boobie Cissoko, are scary athletic.

Punter Zoltan Mesko, in addition to experience, brings a great name. I heard a commenter call him “The Leader of the Evil Empire” and I laughed heartily.

Team Weaknesses
Forcier or Robinson are very much wildcards under center. They should be much better suited to running the spread than last year’s starter Steven Threet, but starting a freshman at QB is always a gamble. There are new starters at safety and defensive line, and given Michigan’s talent on defense, the unit has underperformed in recent seasons. That trend must reverse for sustained improvement.

Kicker Brendan Gibbons is a frosh, replacing KC “Lopautomatica” Lopata.

Michigan faithful are very demanding. Though 3-9 is awful for a program of Michigan’s pedigree, calling for Rodriguez’s head after one season is a tad premature. Though Rodriguez will doubtlessly have pressure on him in 2009, having QBs that fit the system in Forcier and Robinson can’t be underrated.

If the players stay healthy, disciplined and continue to immerse themselves in the spread, the Wolverines will surely have more wins this time around.

2009 Michigan Wolverines Record Prediction: 9-4

This season cannot be as bad as it was last year. Besides the win against Wisconsin and the usual victory in Minnesota, the Wolverines looked awful every week. Even if the defense takes a small step back, the offense simply has to take a step forward. The Wolverines schedule is full of home games and this team better be at least 2-2 after starting off against Western Michigan, Notre Dame, Eastern Michigan and Indiana all in the friendly confines of the Big House. Even a 2-2 record will have some Michigan fans screaming at Coach Rodriguez.

The Wolverines have to be able to run the ball and that falls on Brandon Minor and Michael Shaw. The offensive line was mixed and matched last year, but everybody is back and once the staff finds the right combination, the ground game should flourish.

There are just too many other good teams in the Big Ten for Michigan to win 9 games. The good news is that they are young and should be positioning themselves for a great run next season.
