With the opening round of the NCAA national title tournament in the books, the real fun will begin on Thursday with many of the highest seeded teams taking to the floor. That includes the Mountain West champion San Diego State Aztecs, which will take on the Northern Colorado Bears in their West region second round matchup. The Aztecs proved their merit by finally taking down the BYU Cougars in the MWC championship game, and will now look to focus on even greater goals as the Madness truly begins.
San Diego State won 14 of 16 regular season games in conference play, with their only two losses coming against a BYU team that seemed to have their number. That wasn’t the case in the MWC championship game however, as the Aztecs toyed with the Cougars in a 72-54 win. A notable suspension had a lot to do with that outcome, but that will have little effect on the mindset of a San Diego State team that is eager to prove that they can play with the big boys under the national spotlight where the pressure is the strongest.
They won’t get that shot until at least the third round, as the Aztecs open their tournament schedule against the Big Sky conference champions. Northern Colorado clinched a victory in each of its last seven games overall to earn their conference title, but will find it’s a completely different beast on the national stage. The Bears are nowhere near ready to take on a team as talented as San Diego State, and it should be interesting to see if they can keep it respectable.
The line for this game is set at over 15 points, but double-digit victories looked routine a times for a talented Aztecs’ team during the regular season, and that was against better competition.
There isn’t much room for an upset here as San Diego State looks to set the tone for their tournament, so look for the Mountain West champions to win and cover in their first March Madness 2011 game.
