It kind of feels like the Aztecs have fallen off the face of the earth, doesn’t it. They were supposed to be a national player this year but are only 3rd in their own conference right now.

San Diego State
The only non-conference losses were to Syracuse and Arizona but mostly they have underwhelmed, losing on the road to Air Force and Wyoming. It could be that the Mountain West is one of the strongest conferences in America though.

The Aztecs probably have more perimeter talent than most teams they play against. Their top 4 leading scorers are guards led by Jamaal Franklin, who is fooling some into thinking he is an inside player by averaging 9.5 rebounds per game. Their most productive big is DeShawn Stephens who is second on the team in rebounds but not relied upon for much else. They will need him to stick his nose in there against Colorado State.
San Diego State is certainly talented enough to beat Colorado State. The real question is how much do they want it? [ad-6571516]
How much are they willing to fight on the road against a tough conference opponent? I think they will put forth a great effort that will leave the outcome in doubt down to the final possessions.
Colorado State
The Rams have not skipped a beat under new coach Larry Eustachy, in fact they are better than they were last season with coach Tim Miles. They have won their last 4 games and now sit second in the Mountain West standings. More importantly, with every game, and win, they are moving themselves off of the bubble. The Mountain West might be the most top heavy league in America thanks to the Rams emergence.
Believe it or not Colorado State is the top rebounding team in the country. It is a total team effort led by transfer Colton Iverson, who leads in both scoring and rebounding. Iverson is one of 4 starters averaging between 11 and 14ppg on this very balanced team. They go 8 deep and nobody really plays heavy minutes. The key to the Rams success is teamwork and commitment to their system…and it is working.
I have not seen much of this Colorado State team which makes their high level of success hard to process. Are they really this good? How can they possibly be the top rebounding team in the country. What is their ceiling? These are just some of the many questions to be answered. I think we will get some of them on Wednesday night.
