The Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Marquette Golden Eagles in a Big East matchup between two of the better teams in the conference. Tonight’s game from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Notre Dame survived a brutal start to its Big East conference play with a 69-55 win over No. 13 Georgetown as a 1 ½-point home underdog and a 73-70 win over No. 9 Connecticut as a four-point home favorite. These two games were sandwiched around a 70-58 loss to No. 4 Syracuse as an eight-point road underdog. The Irish are currently 14-2 straight-up overall (6-5 ATS) and 3-1 SU in conference play.

Notre Dame has been extremely balanced on offense with five players averaging in double-figures. Senior guard Ben Hansbrough and senior forward Tim Abromaitis are each averaging over 16 points per game. Hansbrough leads the team in assists with 3.8 per game and Abromaitis in the leading rebounder with 7.3 per game. Another senior forward, Carleton Scott adds to the veteran leadership of this team with 11.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

The Irish are averaging 78 points per game and shooting 45.3 percent from the field. They are hitting 37.7 percent of their shots from three-point range and are shooting 73.6 percent from the free-throw line. Notre Dame is ranked 29th in the nation in rebounds with 39.9 per game and 12th in assists with 17.9.

Marquette started its Big East season with a 79-74 win over West Virginia as a two-point home favorite and a 73-65 victory over Rutgers as a 3 ½-point road favorite, but lost to No. 5 Pittsburgh 89-81 as an 8 ½-point road favorite its last time out. The Golden Eagles are now 11-5 SU overall (6-4 ATS) and 2-1 SU in the conference.

Junior guard Darius Johnson-Odom leads the team with 15.9 points per game, while senior guard-forward Jimmy Butler is averaging 15.1 points and 6.4 rebounds. Junior forward Jae Crowder is also averaging over six rebounds and adding another 12.7 points per game.

The Golden Eagles are currently ranked seventh in the country in field goal percentage, hitting 49.8 percent of their shots and averaging 80.8 points per game. They are 35.3 percent from beyond the three-point line but hitting just 68.9 of their free-throws. Marquette is averaging 37 rebounds per game, giving the slight edge to the Irish in this department.

Trends:

Notre Dame is 3-2 ATS in its last five road games and 3-5 ATS in its last eight games overall. The total is 4-3-1 in these eight games.
Marquette is 2-2 ATS in its last four games at home and 4-0 ATS in its last four games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of its last seven games.
Head-to-head, the Golden Eagles have won six out of the last nine games SU and are 6-3 ATS as well. The total has gone ‘over’ in five of the last seven games.

The Irish won the last meeting 63-60 in overtime as a 6 ½-point road underdog and have a great opportunity to make it two in a row on the road against the Golden Eagles with an outright win tonight.

The overall talent and depth of this year’s squad will be too much for Marquette to handle even with the home-court advantage.

The Pick: Notre Dame +3
