The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is one of the loudest and most intimidating venues in all of college basketball. The site of the 1983 NCAA Final Four is an intimate building in which fans are right on top of the action, creating an especially jarring din that can rattle opposing players.

It’s true that New Mexico is struggling this season, languishing at 2-4 in the Mountain West Conference one year after winning the league’s regular season championship and earning a very high No. 3 seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The NEW BetOnline

The Lobos aren’t going to be very good on a regular basis – they lost two core starters from last year’s excellent roster, Darington Hobson and Ramon Martinez. They still have guard Dairese Gary, but are still shorthanded. Nevertheless, they’re going to put up a good fight this weekend, because the Brigham Young Cougars are in town. BYU and coach Dave Rose sit at 20-1 overall and 6-0 in the Mountain West.

The Cougars just defeated previously-unbeaten San Diego State, 71-58, thanks to 43 points from the current leader in the Naismith Award (Player Of The Year) race, superstar shooter Jimmer Fredette.

Three years ago Stephen Curry of Davidson took the college basketball world by storm, displaying uncommon range and consistency as a deadeye jump shooter. Fredette has evoked many comparisons with Curry while leading his team to a top-10 national ranking. New Mexico will spill the tank in an attempt to stop Fredette.

As has been the case with BYU’s other opponents (except for UCLA, which beat the Cougars on Dec. 18), it probably won’t work.

Take BYU on the road.
