With Duke losing there are now only 4 undefeated teams in the world of college basketball.  Perhaps the most surprising among this group are the Aztecs who might be the best team on the Pacific Coast. Looking at the Aztecs schedule the greatest challenge to their perfection might be this weekend when they visit New Mexico.

One of the reasons the Aztecs are so good is they have a really complete team.  Kawhi Leonard is their star, averaging a double-double, but he is complimented by good size in the frontcourt, a senior point guard, and some darn good shooters.

They are not dripping with talent but they compete hard and seem to play with a bit of a chip on their shoulder.

Add to that an experienced coach in Steve Fisher and there is every reason to believe this is truly a team to be reckoned with.  Oh and at 11-5 ATS they are making money for their backers too.

The New Mexico Lobos are not as good as they were last season but they are still a likely tournament team come March.  They have struggled some on the road this season but have yet to lose at home and the Pit is a very difficult arena to play in.

Last season New Mexico exceeded expectations led by Darrington Hobson, a dynamic wing player.

This season they are more balanced squad with guard Dairese Gary leading the charge.  The key is the integration of UCLA transfer Drew Gordon.  He is in catchup mode after being forced to miss games early in the season due to transfer rules but he is now in the fold and coming off a double-double against Colorado State the last time out.

Gordon gives them a strong player in the post and can combine with 6’11 Alex Kirk to form an imposing front line.

The Mountain West is a much tougher hops conference than most give it credit for and these guys are a big reason why

Free Aztecs vs Lobos Pick

It seems like if the Aztecs are going to lose it won’t be an obvious spot like this one.  New Mexico is always tough on their home floor so I expect the game to go down to the wire with the Aztecs winning.

Score prediction:   SDSU 72 – New Mexico 70
