The No. 4 seed Kentucky Wildcats’ will try to reverse last year’s demoralizing Elite 8 loss to West Virginia as they look to maintain their momentum after a dramatic finish over Ohio State, when they tip off against a North Carolina team who have beaten them two previous times in the Round of Eight.

Kentucky punched their ticket to the East Regional Finals at the Prudential Center in Newark on Sunday, beating the top–seeded and overall tournament favorite Buckeyes 62-60, on Brandon Knight’s fade way jumper with just over five seconds remaining.

It was the second time, Knight, who had shot just 3-10 from the field, came up big, after draining the game-winner in the Cats’ tournament opener against the Princeton Tigers.

While Knight’s bucket made the highlight reel, the Wildcats would not have advanced if not for the heroics of senior big man, Josh Harrellson, who stood toe-to-toe with Ohio’s Jared Sullinger, along with putting up a double double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, as well as trio of game-preserving blocks.

The Wildcats also played smart defense, holding the Buckeyes to just 32.8 percent from the field and crowded the 3-point line allowing just 35.3 percent from long range. They finished the contest outshooting Ohio State with nearly 46 percent from the floor.

As for the Tar Heels, they cruised into the Elite 8 for the 18th time since 1975 with an 18-point win over Marquette on Friday night. It was the school’s 10th consecutive Sweet 16 win.

The trio of John Henson, Tyler Zeller, and Harrison Barnes took advantage of an undersized Golden Eagles squad, bolstering their resume as one of if not the best frontline in this year’s tournament. They combined to score 61 points, grabbed 33 rebounds, and blocked seven shots against Marquette, who simply couldn’t match up with them.

Zeller finished with a double double of 27 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.

North Carolina’s defense smothered the Golden Eagles sharpshooters, holding them to just 36.5 percent from the field, and an abysmal 12 percent from three-point range. It was Marquette’s third-worst shooting performance of the season.

Kentucky will need to plug up the inside, and must find a way to slow down the offensive assault of Zeller, Barnes, and Henson. They will also need the weak link in a solid North Carolina defense, using their 3-point ability to force the Heels to meet them up top.

Matt’s Free Prediction: The Wildcats definitely have some momentum and after their inspiring win over Ohio State. However, North Carolina’s big frontcourt should be enough to edge out a very tight contest.
