The South Florida Bulls travel to the Pavilion to take on Big East power Villanova in an important conference match-up with NCAA Tournament implications for both teams.

The Bulls come into this game with an overall record of 16-10, 6-8 in the Big East. With quality wins over Pittsburgh and Georgetown they still have a decent chance of making it to the Dance, but a win tonight over the Wildcats would go a long way towards ensuring they get an invitation. The main thing that is working against them right now is the fact that they have lost three out of their last four games, including losses to Notre Dame (62-65) and St. Johns (58-74). In their game against the Red Storm, they fell behind by 11 in the first half and were never able to get things going in the second. Dominique Jones and Mike Mercer each scored 17 points and Chris Howard added 14 points and five assists, but it was not enough to avoid a very damaging loss at home.

Through 26 games Jones has been a stud, averaging 21.6 points and six rebounds per game. Augustus Gilchrist is averaging 15.4 points and 6.5 rebounds and Jarrid Famous is averaging 11.2 points and leads the team in rebounds with 7.8 per game.

The Wildcats suffered back to back losses to Connecticut (75-84) and Pittsburgh (65-70) which probably has done some serious damage to their chances of getting a #1 seed for the NCAA tournament. They will need a solid finish in their last four regular season games to have a chance. With Syracuse and West Virginia still on the schedule, they cannot afford to look past this game. They are currently 22-4 overall and 11-3 in the conference, one game behind the Orange and 1 ½ games ahead of the Mountaineers in the conference. In their loss to Pitt, the Panthers were able to control the tempo of the game as well as the offensive and defensive boards to keep the Wildcats completely off balance. Scottie Reynolds finished with 20 points, including 17 in the second half to help keep the game close, but received little help from his supporting cast.

Through 26 games Reynolds is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 19 points per game. Cory Fisher is averaging 14.1 points and four assists, while Antonio Pena leads in rebounds with 7.5 per game.

Villanova lost back to back games for the first time in two seasons so the likelihood of them dropping three in a row is extremely slim. The big question will be South Florida’s ability to keep this game close enough to cover the spread. After their last two games, the Wildcats will be in no mood to allow the Bulls to hang around too long in this one.
