Gonzaga was very impressive in handling slightly favoured St. Johns in Round 2. They actually looked like the team many thought deserved a top 20 ranking to begin the season and probably played their best game of the season. They also get a good draw in Round 3 with the BYU Cougars.
Obviously guard Jimmer Fredette can be tough to handle but I think the Cougars are going to be equally challenged to defend the trio of Stephen Gray, Robert Sacre and Elias Harris….and I didn’t even mention guard Marquise Carter who led the Zags with 24 points against the Johnnies.
When I filled out my bracket I thought this would be a tough game for the Cougars and now I think Gonzaga might actually deserve to be the favourite in this spot. 
It took a little while for BYU to get going in their opener against Wofford. The Terriers were determined to not let Jimmer Fredette beat them and the Cougars needed time to adjust and get him into the flow of the game. In the end BYU won relatively easily with a solid defensive effort but I think they may have been exposed just a little bit.
Wofford is not that stout a defensive team and the Cougars went through some stretches where they had difficulty scoring, partly due to poor shot selection. Against Gonzaga which is bigger and more athletic they are going to need to get more contributions from players not named Jimmer if they want to advance.
I am not sure who is going to step up.

Prediction: Gonzaga was really impressive Thursday night, more so than BYU. That might nip the spread on this one a little bit but I like the Bulldogs to rekindle their historical underdog magic with the upset victory.
