After an another atrocious football season, the sports fans in Pullman will be hoping their Cougars basketball team will be able to restore some broken spirits while giving them something to cheer about once again.

The season appeared to have started that way as Washington State stormed out of the starting blocks with five straight wins, only to be halted with a 63-58 loss to fifth-ranked Kansas State on Friday night in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series.

Now the Cougs will look to get back on the rails as they face a Gonzaga team that has been struggling to find victories this season, losing 73-61 against No. 20 Illinois who used a big second-half run fueled by 3-pointers to blow past Gonzaga, on Saturday.

The Illini defense had not trouble frustrating the ‘Dogs offense, holding leading scorer (34 PPG) Stephen Gray to just two points until midway through the second half. Robert Sacre provided the only scoring danger for the Bulldogs, scoring nine straight points to help Gonzaga stay in the second half, and finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.

It was a poor outing all together and one that the Cougars will hope they repeat as Washington will look to springboard with a win after its loss to the Wildcats.

After taking an early 10-7 lead, it all fell apart for the Cougars who closed out the final 12:46 of the first half with just one field that found them trailing by 10 early in the second half. Leading scorer Klay Thompson led the charge with 16 points, as the Cougs were able to regain a narrow lead late in the game but was unable to hang on. Reggie Moore, in his first action of the season, added 10 points.

So is the Cougars 5-0 start to the season a fluke against weaker competition? Its bout against Gonzaga will reveal the answer I’m sure.

It remains to be seen how much WSU’s defense has improved after allowing nearly 71 points per game and 44.8 percent shooting a year ago. So far, they are yielding just 56 PPG, but did surrender 71 against Idaho and 68 to Portland.

Gonzaga is averaging nearly 80 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting, and other than KSU, will be the Cougars toughest opponent on an otherwise weak out-of-conference schedule.

The Bulldogs beat the Cougars in their last meeting 74-69 on Dec 2, 2009, holding the Cougars without a field goal for 10 minutes in the late going to overcome a 13-point second-half deficit.

This time around, I don’t see the Bulldogs having to rally for a late charge as they take command early on in this one. Thompson will led his young Cougars—and I mean young with zero seniors and just four juniors in its regular starting lineup—emerging as the teams scoring leader, but Zaga’s better inside play and potent perimeter snipers will get his one done on the road.
