NUGGETS vs. THUNDER

Time: Wednesday 8 ET
Venue: Ford Center, Oklahoma City
Spread: Thunder -2.5
Over/Under: 212 (-110)

Team records:
Denver: 50-27 SU, 32-39-6 ATS
Oklahoma City: 48-29 SU, 46-31 ATS

If nothing else, a victory over the Thunder tonight in Oklahoma City will enable the Nuggets to thin the herd a bit as they start the final week of the regular season. Denver has 5 toughies left (OKC, Lakers, San Antonio, Memphis and Phoenix) as it tries to find its game again after a rough stretch in late March when the Nuggets lost 5 of 6 and basically peed away the No. 2 playoff seed in the Western Conference.

Denver trails Utah by a game in the race for the second seed, but the Jazz have a much easier schedule this week and aren’t likely to drop 3 of their last 4. The Nuggets are tied with Dallas and Phoenix at 50-27, and a win tonight would at least get OKC (48-29 and closing fast) off their backs.

Easier said than done, though. The Thunder have young legs and won’t be bothered too much by the wild overtime loss in Utah last night. In fact, OKC is 7-4 in the back end of its last 11 back-to-back sets, and has played the strong teams (San Antonio, Boston, Lakers) as tough as any team in the league since the All-Star break. The NBA, as former Celtics coach Tom Heinsohn was fond of saying, is all about matchups, and the Carmelo Anthony-Kevin Durant battle-within-the-battle will be interesting. Durant still has an outside chance to win the scoring title, and while he says that’s not important to him right now, he has gone for over 40 two games in a row.

Betting Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 6 of Denver’s last 7 games when playing on the road against Oklahoma City
The total has gone OVER in 10 of Denver’s last 12 games when playing Oklahoma City
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Denver’s last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 5 of Oklahoma City’s last 5 games
The total has gone OVER in 6 of Oklahoma City’s last 7 games when playing at home against Denver
The total has gone OVER in 10 of Oklahoma City’s last 12 games when playing Denver
Oklahoma City is 9-2 SU in its last 11 games at home
Denver is 6-1 SU in its last 7 games when playing Oklahoma City

Nuggets vs. Thunder Free Pick:

Victories over banged-up Portland and the hopeless Clippers have settled nerves a bit in Denver, but as the schedule stiffens, pressure will be on interim coach Adrian Dantley to play veterans big minutes in an effort to grab the No. 2 seed. Complicating matters is the status of two injured bigs – Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen. Both will be game-time decisions. The Nuggets have been a lousy road team since coach George Karl took a leave to undergo treatment for cancer, and even Dantley missed a practice because of a kidney stone.

The rested Nuggets will keep it close, but OKC is just playing too well right now and should cover 2.5.

Parlay players should take a look at the over as Denver might try to run, hoping that the Thunder’s legs are weary from last night’s OT game in Salt Lake City.
