It’s East Coast versus West Coast as the Los Angeles Lakers play host to the NBA’s highest scoring team, the New York Knicks, for the first time this season on Sunday night.

New York leads the league at 108.1 points per game and is coming off a dominating win over the Phoenix Suns, 121-96 its last time out.

Amare Stoudemire, who spent the first eight years of his career with Phoenix and was a five-time All-Star, scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds in his return to Phoenix, as the Knicks extended their win streak to three.

Raymond Felton made five three-pointers en route to 23 points for New York, which started a four-game road trip on Friday. Felton also dished out 11 assists and pulled down 10 rebounds while Wilson Chandler tallied 16 points and six rebounds and Landry Fields donated 14 points and 10 boards. Shawne Williams had 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles’ Kobe Bryant scored a game-high 25 points  and Paul Gasol contributed 21 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, as the Lakers dropped the Hornets, 101-97, at Staples Center on Friday.

Bryant, dealing with a nagging knee injury, shot 10-of-19 from the field and passed Hall-of-Famer Oscar Robertson into sole possession of ninth place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom each chipped in 17 points, with the latter adding 13 rebounds in the win, Los Angeles’ third straight victory following a 2-4 stretch. Los Angeles is second in rebounds in the league at 44.2.

The Knicks are seven games back of the division leading Celtics while the Lakers holds a commanding 10 ½ game lead atop the Pacific Division.

New York is second in the league in free throw percentage at 79.5 and leads the league in three points made with 9.3 per game. However, despite all their scoring, the team is third worst in defense in overall, allowing 106.2 points per game.

The Lakers have beaten the Knicks the last six straight with New York’s last win in Los Angeles coming back on February 13, 2007.

This should be an interesting game as the Lakers have won five of six after losing three straight games by 16 points or more.

New York will be without forward Danilo Gallinari, while Los Angeles  will be without reserve forward Matt Barnes, who left Friday’s game against New Orleans in the first half with a knee injury. The Lakers did receive good news, though, when backup point guard Steve Blake was able to practice after leaving Friday’s game with an injury to his left ankle. He is expected to play Sunday.

Stoudemire remains hot, averaging 26.3 points, nine rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, while Bryant will be forced to play through his injury. I think the Knicks will edge out a much–needed win here if they want to catch Boston, beating the best of the west while removing all doubts that Stoudemire is an early nominee for league MVP.
