What now?

Do the Mavericks really have many (over even any?) options as they trudge to American Airlines Arena tonight for Game 2 in what is shaping up to be a very short NBA Finals series?

The Mavs need everything to go right for them in order to win this series, and in Game 1 nothing went right. The offense which produced nearly 99 points a game during 15 previous playoff games was gasping for breath in the first and third periods (17 points each). Dirk Nowitzki got his sugar fix, but he had to supply one out of every three points the Mavs put on the board against the Heat’s pressure defense. On the other end of the court, Dallas’s ace in the hole (its heretofore effective zone defense) was next to ineffective. And the rebounding was awful and the bench play worse.

And did we mention that Nowitzki has a finger injury?

You don’t need a GPS to figure out where this is headed, and a Miami win tonight will just about put the lights out. Not even a U.S. Olympic Dream Team would be able to win 4 of 5 against the Heat the way they’re playing right now.

What has to gnaw at Rick Carlisle today is the way his team could have stolen Game 1. Through three periods the Heat shot a measly 36 percent from the floor. Assuming Miami is closer to its normal playoff percentage of 44 tonight, it will be more than a little difficult for the Mavs to hang.

BEST BET: With the Mavs getting 4.5, bettors have been backing the Dallas by about a 3-2 margin since the line was posted. Maybe it’s just a betting public that is wagering with its heart, because it seems foolish to abandon Miami, which has been demolishing the number. Miami has won 5 straight, 7 of the last 8, and 9 of the last 11 ATS.

On the theory that it’s suicide to bet on a streak to end, liking Miami again at -4.5 tonight.
