Like just about all of us, you figured before the season that it was about over for the Mavericks and Spurs (and maybe the Celtics, too). Age has a way of grinding away at even the best teams, and there was no way that Tim Duncan and Dirk Nowitzki could carry their teams through another 82-game regular season schedule.
But with a litte more than a dozen games left before the real season starts, here they are. San Antonio has played at such a high level all season that the Spurs basically clinched the league’s best record (and home-court edge throughout the playoffs) by the All-Star break. Dallas was able to hang with the Spurs until Nowitzki went out with an injury in mid-season, but since he returned the Mavs have become dominant again.
So much for age.
San Antonio’s secret is no secret at all. The Spurs have been able to keep the core of their roster healthy. Manu Ginobili has amazingly played in all 67 games. Same with Duncan. Tony Parker has missed only a few. Richard Jefferson has played all but one. No one in the deep rotation has missed significant time. And when they Spurs are healthy, they can throw a lot of bodies at their opponents. Gregg Popovich has been monitoring playing time for a month now, and the starters averaging only about 30 minutes a game.
Depth is more of a problem for the Mavericks, who sank like a stone when Nowitzki went down in mid-season. Jason Terry and Jason Kidd both have an insane amount of miles on their tires, and Dallas struggles mightily when Nowitzki is out of the lineup.

BEST BET: The Mavs have a nice comfy road ahead after this game, with five winnable games before a very interesting game against the Lakers in Los Angeles. Dallas and LA, who have the same record (48-20), have split two games this season and could be battling for the Western Conference No. 2 seed the rest of the way.
San Antonio is coming off a rare blowout loss (at Miami) and has lost two in a row only once this season (Jan. 4/5 New York and Boston).
Not much to play for here for the Spurs, though, so we’re liking Mavs -2.
