Charlotte

The Charlotte Hornets have won two of their last three games, but they have the not-so-honorable pleasure of being the Los Angeles Lakers’ first win, as they fell to L.A. 107-92 on Sunday night.

So far this season, the Hornets are just 21st in scoring. The team is averaging 95.9 points per contest, and it’s just 24th in offensive efficiency.

While the defense isn’t quite what it was last season (at least as of yet), that’s the side of the floor where this team is winning games. The team is 10th in defensive efficiency, and it’s 14th in points allowed at 98.3 per contest.

Against Portland, the goal will be to shut down the stars. Portland’s bench is still struggling (although Chris Kaman has been a breath of fresh air compared to what the backup centers did a year ago), and it’s containing LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard that will be the objective.

Portland

Portland is still struggling a bit when it comes to offensive efficiency, but the showing against Denver on Sunday night is a good sign for Rip City.

Against Denver, the Blazers shot 45 percent from the field, as well as better than 51 percent from the three-point line. They scored 116 points, and while the Nuggets are hardly a defensive juggernaut, the Hornets haven’t looked like the elite defensive squad we saw in 2013-14.

For Portland, offense won’t be the problem in this one, as long as Aldridge and Lillard (as well as Matthews) avoid mistakes. However, Nicolas Batum is out with a leg injury, and he’s been the do-it-all swingman this team has needed early in the year.

NBA Handicapping Trends:

  • Under is 7-2 in POR last 9 overall.
  • Under is 6-2 in POR last 8 vs. NBA Southeast.
  • POR are 7-19 ATS in their last 26 Tue. games.
  • Under is 19-7 in CHAR last 26 Tue. games.
  • Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last 8 meetings.
  • CHAR are 2-8 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

4* NBA Prediction: Portland 115 – Charlotte 105

If the Hornets can come out and show that they’re a better defensive unit than we’ve seen thus far, this one could be interesting.

The Blazers are in the middle of a four-games-in-five-nights stretch, and offense could be hard to come by if Kemba Walker, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Lance Stephenson and crew take away Portland’s perimeter scoring.

Unfortunately, this is also the same squad that just gave the lowly Los Angeles Lakers their first win of the year, and in doing so, giving up 107 points in the process.

Look for both teams to be aggressive early, but don’t be shocked if the Blazers wear down the Hornets late. Portland will need a better second-half showing than they had against the Los Angeles Clippers (when they came out hot early), so if they play like they did against the Nuggets, this should be their fifth win of the season.
