Key players lost – Drew Gooden, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw

Clippers seasons usually end in disaster, but Los Angeles managed to shake things up last season and begin the season with one. No. 1 overall pick Blake Griffin was lost for the year before he even played a game, suffering a knee injury and completely sucking the wind out of the franchise.

Blake is back, though, and he looks like a superstar in the making. Preseason games should be judged with a silo of salt but, if they’re any indication, Griffin is going to tear through the NBA in 2010-11.

The power forward is averaging 17.3 points and 12.3 rebounds through six preseason games, not to mention a few dominating performances. Against Denver, Griffin posted 24 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks; against Utah, he racked up 17 points, 14 rebounds and a pair of steals. If Griffin can figure out how to hit free throws (23-41 in the preseason) he’ll be borderline unstoppable.

The club’s biggest X-factor, however, is Baron Davis. At times, Davis is a beast—but those times have been few and far between since joining the Clips two years ago. The veteran point guard has yet to demonstrate the tenacity and big-play ability he become so popular for at Golden State. Online Sports Betting at Sportsbook

Many believe Davis simply doesn’t enjoy it in L.A., particularly because of the Clippers’ lackluster fan support. Davis is a guy who feeds off the crowd’s energy, something that’s in short supply in Los Angeles. Of course, it’s a bit of a chicken and egg question. Is the crowd dead because Davis is playing poorly, or is Davis playing poorly because the crowd is dead? Hopefully, Griffin will inject some life into both of them.

Los Angeles has a few other solid players in the fold. Chris Kaman led the Clippers in scoring (18.3 points per game) and finished second in rebounding (9.3 per game) last season. He should be even more effective paired with Griffin. Eric Gordon, meanwhile, looks like a great young scoring guard. The former seventh-overall pick is entering his third year in the league after averaging 16.4 points per game through the first two.

The Clippers also added Ryan Gomes at small forward; he should fit in nicely and take care of much of the dirty work.

Assuming Davis shows up to play, the Clippers actually have a respectable starting five. Playoff appearances are few and far between for Los Angeles—just two in the past 17 seasons—but it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the Clips hung around and snagged a seven or eight seed in the West.

Surprising stat: Baron Davis hit just 27.7 percent of his threes last year—while taking a whopping 296 of them.
Strengths: A solid starting five. A nice mixture of youth and experience.
Weaknesses: The bench is thin. Davis’ sour attitude. The fact that the Clippers are generally cursed.
Playoffs? The postseason isn’t out of reach. Some things have to fall L.A.’s way, but it might be able to sneak in.
Win total projection for 2010-11: 40-45 wins.
