With the Celtics, what you’ll see for the next six months is not what you’ll get when the warm weather starts to return next spring. If all goes according to plan, the Celtics will methodically grind through the mandatory 82-game schedule, with Doc Rivers monitoring the minutes of his future Hall of Famers with an eye toward making another playoff run come April-May-June.
Victories in January and February will be sacrificed as Gang Green circles with wagons in the playoffs for one more championship sprint.
It won’t be easy selling tickets for a team that has all but announced that the regular season will be treated as Preseason 2.0, but the Celts have enough star power (Shaq, Garnett, Pierce, Rondo, Allen … the list goes on and on) to keep everyone’s interest, at least until playoff position jockeying starts in earnest after the All-Star break.
Some nights the Celtics will be able to dial up a victory on talent alone. Other nights opponents with halfway decent talent (Chicago? Atlanta?) will croak them because Boston will just not be motivated enough.
Bettors will have no idea which Celtic team will show up on a given night, though they might be a decent play after a 3-game losing streak and the locker room gets pissed off.
If you view the Heat as barbarians at the gate, the Celtics are one of the few NBA options left for defending the castle.
Boston may have the deepest bench in the league (one O’Neal, and maybe both if/when Kendrick Perkins returns midway through the season), West, Glen Davis, Nate Robinson, Marquis Daniels all can contribute and keep the starters’ legs fresh for when the games really count.
One concern for the Celts is maintaining defensive intensity (Boston slipped a bit last season). Their bread and butter is on the defensive end, and there is skepticism that the O’Neals will show all that much interest in defensive rotations, especially early in the year.
