Over/under regular season wins Odds: 52.5 (over -115)

Consider that a year ago the Nuggets had both Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson, the team figured to go nowhere and coach George Karl was ordering Tums by the case.

It would have been impossible for any sane fan to predict that the team would get to the Western Conference finals.

Key players added – Ty Lawson

Key players lost – Dahntay Jones

The key, of course, was getting rid of nutso Iverson. That the Nuggets were able to receive Chauncey Billups in the deal, bringing some reason and professionalism to a club that had sorely lacked it, made the deal more than a steal.

They gave up something they didn’t want for something that transformed the franchise. Oh, there are still a few whackos to keep an eye on. Kenyon Martin’s fuse is always among the shortest in the league and J.R. Smith, who figures to start, has plenty of street cred.

Anthony has issues and can’t seem to get through a season without making off-the-court headlines.

But you have to look long and hard at a team that finished atop the Northwest Division with 54 wins, then beat New Orleans and Dallas before extending the Lakers to six games in the Western Conference finals.

Surprising stat: Nene averaged 14.6 points and 7.8 rebounds, shot 60 percent from the field and played in 77 games – all while recovering from testicular cancer.

Strengths: Billups is among the top 5 in the league at making big shots, and his presence on the court helps the Nuggets at least pretend that they care about defense.

Weaknesses: Will they be able to surprise everyone the way they did last season? If not, do they have the talent to go toe-to-toe with the Spurs and Lakers?

Playoffs? Yes, but they probably won’t go as deep as they did last season.

Win total projection for 2009-10 — 55
