2010 Food City 500 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview:  Aside from the usual storylines when NASCAR visits “the World’s Fastest Half-Mile,” there are a few things to watch for this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway:

Race: Food City 500
Date: Sunday, March 21, 2010
Time: 1:13 PM EST (scheduled Green Flag)
TV: 1:00 PM EST on FOX

1) Goodyear brought a brand-new tire compound this weekend and drivers have been noting a lack of grip and less rubbering in of the track; rain on Sunday (see No. 2) will exacerbate that situation.
2) The weather at Bristol looks good up until race time, when the chance of rain will be at least 30% and increasing throughout the day.
3) Friday’s qualifying resulted in a first-time polesitter, Joey Logano, making him the youngest-ever pole winner in Cup history; Kurt Busch starts on the outside pole.
4). An extension of the SAFER barriers in Turns 2 and 4 have narrowed the width of each turn by about three feet and may cause some issues, especially for drivers used to the old configuration.

Safe Bets:

1. Jeff Gordon (6/1): Gordon and Kurt Busch are tied for the most wins ever at Bristol with five a piece. Gordon got off to a bit of a slow start this season, but finished third in Las Vegas a few weeks ago after dominating the race and was fifth last week in Atlanta. He also finished fourth in this race last year. Gordon has led the most miles so far in 2010, followed by Kurt Busch. Jeff starts the race from P5.

2. Kurt Busch (12/1): As noted above, Busch and Gordon each have five wins at Bristol, but Busch has 18 starts here compared to 34 for Gordon. Busch is off to a strong start in 2010, winning at Atlanta last week and currently running tenth in the point standings.

Dark Horse:

1. Marcos Ambrose (40/1): Ambrose has only made two Bristol starts, but he finished tenth and third, giving him the best average finish of any driver in the series. As he’s never won a Cup race, a win here by Ambrose would be a landmark victory. He starts ninth.

Summary: You can’t rule out any of the Joe Gibbs drivers at Bristol – Hamlin, Logano, or Kyle Busch. KyBu is the odds-on favorite, but qualified 38th on Friday – the deepest-ever starting spot for a race winner here (Elliott Sadler in 2001).

Race Date: Sunday, March 21
Location: Bristol Motor Speedway, Bristol, Tenn.
Pre-Race: 12:00PM ET
Green Flag: Approx. 1:13PM ET
TV Coverage: FOX
Track Type: Oval (500 laps)
