2010 Coke Zero 400 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Preview: If you listen to the drivers this weekend, it sounds like the 2010 Coke Zero 400 will be the equivalent of dropping a bucketful of ping-pong balls on a marble floor. The track is extremely hot and slick and the cars have a bigger plate this time around with more power.

Race: The Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway
Date: Saturday, July 3, 2010
Time: 7:49 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 7:30 PM EST on TNT

In fact, there were multiple wrecks during Thursday’s practice sessions and several drivers, including Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, David Ragan, Kyle Busch, and Kasey Kahne among others, will be going to back-up cars. Qualifying was rained out Friday, putting Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson on the front row.

This is also an impound race, so teams will not be working on the cars before the race, but NASCAR may consider working a competition caution into the early going.

There is a chance of thunderstorms in Daytona Saturday as well.

Safe Bets:

1. Tony Stewart (+4/1): Stewart has won three of the last five July Daytona races and has led more laps here than any other driver. He also expressed a lot of optimism about his back-up car: “The good news is that the car, the backup car, is actually the car I won the race with last year, so it is not a brand new car …

I’m confident in that car. Obviously, it was a good car last year and handled well.”

2. Jeff Gordon (6/1): Gordon was eighth in Happy Hour practice on Thursday, but had the fastest ten-lap average of any driver.

He has more wins than any other driver here as well, a total of six, compared to Stewart, the next closest in wins with three.

Dark Horse:

1. Juan Pablo Montoya (22/1): Montoya finished ninth in this race last year and tenth in the 2010 Daytona 500 in February. He was second-fastest in Happy Hour practice on the ten-lap average.

Summary: Marcos Ambrose predicted this might be one of the wildest races in a long time, and I suspect he will be right.
