2009 Price Chopper 400 Predictions – Betting Preview + Picks + Odds

Race: The Price Chopper 400 Presented by Kraft Foods at Kansas Speedway
Date: Sunday, October 4, 2009
Time: 2:16 PM EST (scheduled green flag)
TV: 2:00 PM EST on ABC

Preview: There are not too many venues on the NASCAR schedule that the series visits only once a year, but Kansas Speedway is one of them. It’s also one of the newest tracks on the Cup circuit with just eight races having been held here since the first one in 2001.

Seven of those eight races have been won by a driver currently in the Chase, including two wins by Jeff Gordon and one each by Ryan Newman, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, and Jimmie Johnson. Johnson won here last year after leading 124 of 267 laps on the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval.

It’s worth noting that Jayski.com is reporting (via Claire B. Lang) that the No. 48 and No. 5 cars driven by Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin were “too close to NASCAR tolerances” in an R&D inspection this week.

Safe Bets:

1. Jimmie Johnson (+400): As mentioned above, Johnson won at Kansas last year and is also coming off a win at Dover last week. Now just 10 points out of first in the standings, Johnson and the No. 48 team have added incentive to win races and earn as many points as they can along the way in their quest for a record-setting fourth Sprint Cup championship.

2. Greg Biffle (+1200): Biffle won this race two years ago and has finished second once and third twice. Biffle leads all drivers in total points accumulated here over the last five races, with Jimmie Johnson second, and would like very much to score a win before the 2009 season ends.

Dark Horse:

1. Ryan Newman (+3000): Though he was with a different team at the time, Newman finished second in the first two Kansas races back in 2001 and 2002 and won here in 2003. While he’s struggled since then at Kansas, he has proven that he can get around this racetrack and is carrying the momentum of two straight top-10 Chase finishes into Kansas this week.

Summary: Kansas is often described as a sister track to Chicagoland Speedway, and the winner there in July was … Mark Martin, the current Sprint Cup points leader.
