Last night’s game turned into a pitching duel, and the oddsmakers are expecting the same in this one.
Price has been on his game all season in 2012. He has a 2.35 ERA for the season, and his ERA is an awesome 1.16 in his last three starts. It was Jeff Niemann who shut down the Yankees yesterday, and Price will look to do the same today. Tampa Bay’s offense received a nice boost when Desmond Jennings came back to the lineup last night. The Rays trailed 1-0 going into the ninth inning, but Matt Joyce won the game with a big three run homer off David Robertson. Without Evan Longoria in the lineup, the Rays need big production out of Joyce and B.J. Upton.
David Robertson hadn’t allowed a run since last September 1, but he blew the save last night in his second chance since inheriting the closer spot when Mariano Rivera went down with a season-ending injury. The Yankees still have faith in Robertson, but he’ll have to stop allowing so many base runners.
He can’t always wiggle out of jams. The Yankees lead the majors in home runs with 47, but the offense has been inconsistent of late. C.C. Sabathia started the season slowly, but he has been rounding into form of late. The Yankees have gotten only 10 quality starts from their pitching staff this year.
They need a solid effort from their leader Thursday night.
The Rays are actually 5-0 in the last 5 games when Price has gone up against Sabathia. They are also 8-1 in their last 9 meetings with the Yankees. Tampa Bay is a solid value in this game.
