Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox Preview

Even though they are still in the basement of the AL East they are only 5.5 games out of first place and they have won 4 of 6 games facing the Rays this season. Tampa Bay is 6-4 in their last 10 games and they are only 1 game back of the Orioles for first place in the AL East.

In their last games the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 and the Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4.

This season the Rays have an O/U record of 18-23 with a run-line W/L record of 19-26 and the Red Sox have an O/U record of 26-17 with a run-line W/L record of 21-23.

Even though the Red Sox are still 2 games under .500 at home (9-11) they have won 5 straight at Fenway and this season the Rays are 10-11 on the road.

Alex Cobb (1-0, 2.57 ERA) takes the hill for the Rays tonight and in his last start he was solid giving up 2 earned runs in 7 innings in a win over the Braves. Jon Lester (3-3, 3.95 ERA) goes for the Red Sox tonight and in his last outing he got the win against the Phillies even though he gave up 4 earned runs in 6 innings.

Lester is looking for his 3rd straight win and even though he is 10-6 facing the Rays in his career he has lost his last 2 starts facing them. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Cobb is making his first start against the Red Sox tonight.

Tampa’s pitching has really struggled in the Boston losses this season giving up 36 runs in the 4 games.

After their offense had sputtered in losing 4 of 5 games the Rays have scored 13 runs in their last 2 games both of which they won.

Cobb has to be careful with David Ortiz, who is hitting .455 with 1 HR and 8 RBI in 6 games facing the Rays this season. Cobb will be facing a Red Sox offense that ranks 3rd in the Majors in runs scored and batting average.

In some betting trends for this AL East match up the Rays are 14-5 in their last 19 games following a win, 2-7 in their last 9 road games vs. a left-handed starter, and they have an Under record of 7-2-1 in their last 10 road games.

The Red Sox are 4-1 in their last 5 overall, 4-9 in Lester’s last 13 starts, and they have an Over record of 17-7-1 in their last 25 home games.

Jason’s Pick: Have to go with the Red Sox since they are red hot at home and I think Lester will have another solid start.
