Matchup | Preview

The Giants have won 6 of their last 7 games, and they have moved to within three games of the NL West lead.

San Diego has the worst record in baseball, and the Padres have lost eight of their last nine games.

San Francisco has gotten a major boost from the offensive performance of Melky Cabrera this season. Cabrera is hitting .371, and he has helped this offense become much more formidable in 2012. Buster Posey is hitting .295, and he leads the team with 29 RBI’s.

Posey seems to be fully recovered from last year’s injury. Tim Lincecum will be on the hill for this one, and he hasn’t been himself in 2012. Lincecum is 2-6 with a 5.82 ERA so far this season. His velocity has dropped a great deal, and his strikeout/walk ratio isn’t even close to what it has been in previous years.  [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

If the Giants are going to make a serious run, they need Lincecum to be at his best.

The San Diego Padres have had a tough time scoring runs for the past few years. It is nothing new to see the Padres second to last in the majors in runs scored and last in home runs. At the same time, the Padres pitching staff usually kept them in games, but that isn’t the case too often anymore.

Despite pitching in one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in baseball, the Padres pitching staff hasn’t been very good this year.

San Diego starters have delivered only 24 quality starts in 55 games this year. Anthony Bass is a talented young pitcher who appears to have lots of potential, but he is still inconsistent right now.

These pitchers are getting a little too much respect in this contest. Lincecum hasn’t shown he is the same pitcher he used to be, and Bass is still inconsistent. I think this number is slightly too low.
