San Francisco

The series has been a microcosm of their season as they have struggled with close games but been able to have outbursts at the plate that have fueled victory. Catcher Buster Posey was the big bat yesterday and he is having another MVP calibre season if the Giants can stay in the race or make the playoffs.

Chad Gaudin has certainly made his way around the Majors, with San Francisco being his 9th team in a 10 year career. So far this stop has been pretty good as Gaudin has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen sporting an ERA of 2.21. Sunday is going to be just his second start though. The first went well as he delivered a quality outing in a win against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Giants pitching used to be their strength but this year they are grasping for pitchers to keep them in ball games due to injuy and poor performance.

Arizona

Arizona is holding their ground with a split so far in this series. The Diamondbacks are at the top of the National League West standings and are being pushed there by the play of slugging first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Speaking of MVP candidates “Goldie” has to be at the top of that list, he only leads the D-Backs in average, homers, RBI, runs and steals. On the bump Arizona is getting phenomenal production from their young pitchers, even lightly touted prospects like Patrick Corbin. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
Lefty Tyler Skaggs was much more highly touted than Corbin and is finally getting a chance to really show what he can do as it looks like he has been called up from the minors for good. Skaggs has made two starts and the numbers look pretty good. Arizona has won both games while Skaggs has struck out more than a batter an inning, posting a WHIP of just 1.03. He has yet to pitch deep into a game though. Once he masters that he will be an even better source of value for bettors.

O/U: Over
Score Prediction: Arizona 7 – San Francisco 4

Nice value on the Diamondbacks on Sunday as they look to take the series from the Giants. Skaggs has been greatly anticipated and even though the Giants roughed him up last season I am way more confident backing him than journeyman Chad Gaudin. The way the Giants swing the bat thought the over is also a good play if you can’t get comfortable with either side.
