MLB Game Preview for September 14, 2010: New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays

The AL East race is driving online sports betting enthusiasts crazy. As NFL betting and college football betting get into full swing, the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays cannot decide who will pull away as the favorite in the battle for the AL East pennant. To make the MLB betting even more difficult, the Yankees and the Rays keep losing key games in the last seven to 10 days.

This upcoming series with the Yankees is exactly what the Rays need to put Tampa back on top of the AL East. The Yankees are coming off of a three-game losing streak that allowed Tampa to get back within a half game of the AL East lead. The Rays could have been in first place during the Yankee losing streak, but the Rays hit a couple of snags of their own.

In their last 10 games the Yankees are 4-6 including the aforementioned three-game losing streak. A better than .500 record in their last 10 games would have at least brought the Rays tied with the Yankees, but the Rays wound up going 5-5 with a critical loss to the Toronto Blue Jays in their last start.

This game will be the second game in this series between the Yankees and Rays, and this should be one of the best series of the regular season. Whichever team loses the AL East pennant is in good shape to get the AL wild card, but neither one of these teams wants to settle on the AL wild card. This series will be hotly contested and full of emotion. Having this series played in Tampa definitely is an advantage for the Rays.

The Yankees show a lot of confidence in rookie pitcher Ivan Nova, as they let him start this extremely important road game against the Rays. Nova has a 1-0 record with a 2.92 ERA, but the Yankees have won three out of the four games the rookie has started this season. This game is Nova’s chance to solidify a place on the Yankee starting rotation going into the playoffs.

The Rays are not inclined to take the same chances as the Yankees as they put Matt Garza on the mound with his 14-8 record and 3.68 ERA. Garza has had a difficult time of late as he lost his last start by allowing four home runs in only four and two-thirds innings of work. But Garza is 19-10 at Tropicana Field, and he figures to be a major contributor to the Rays playoff run this season.

The Yankees have been lifted recently by the play of their closer Mariano Rivera and the re-emergence of the Yankee bats. But all of that seemed to suddenly come to an end in the last three games. With the possibility of manager Joe Girardi leaving next season, the Yankees may be distracted. The defending champs need to pull it together and make their run for the AL East pennant in this series with the Rays.

Pick: New York Yankees 4-2
