MLB Game Preview for September 18, 2010: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim @ Tampa Bay Rays

The sports betting world was treated to an exciting three-game series between the Tampa Bay Rays and the New York Yankees in which the Rays won two out of three games to maintain a slim lead in the AL East. The NFL betting in New York and Tampa is going to have to wait until the Yankees and Rays can figure out who will take the AL East pennant, and who will have to settle for the AL wild card.

The Tampa Bay Rays have a difficult task in front of them. As the Yankees head off to face the hapless Baltimore Orioles, the Rays will host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim who are playing winning baseball as of late. The Angels have won six out of their last 10 games, and are clawing their way towards a .500 record.

The Rays, as was mentioned, just took two out of three from the Yankees but are only playing .500 baseball of late. The hitting has been there for Tampa, but the pitching has been a bit suspect. Especially concerning for the Rays is their bullpen. The Rays have also been the victim of some bad officiating, but that has not been the cornerstone of their spotty play as of late.

The MLB betting odds makers are still picking the Yankees to win the AL East pennant and the World Series this year. But the sportsbook reviews on the Rays this season indicate a team that has been resilient when they need to be. The Rays need to go on a winning streak because the Yankees have an easy schedule for the next week or so. If the Rays allow the Yankees to get away now, then the AL East pennant will slip away as well.

This will be the second game of this series, and the Angels will be putting Joel Pineiro on the mound. Pineiro has a 10-7 record this season and a 4.18 ERA. Pineiro injured himself in late July, and this is his first action in the majors since then. He had on conditioning assignment in the minors where he threw five shut-out innings. He looks to be sharp, and he could give the Rays problems.

The Rays will be putting their ace David Price on the mound for this game. Price has been almost perfect in September as he has posted a 2-0 record and an ERA under 1.00. For the season, Price is 17-6 with a 2.75 ERA. The Rays are more than happy to get Price the work he needs to keep him sharp moving into the playoffs.

The Rays can score the runs they need to win any game they play in, the problem is having the bullpen hold on to the lead going into the late innings. Price can go seven or even eight innings if needed, but this late in the season it is doubtful that the Rays will keep their ace on the mound for more than six innings. That means the Rays bullpen will have to shut down the Angels bats, and that may not be a good match-up for the Rays.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 6-3
