Minnesota Twins (14-6) at Detroit Tigers (11-10)

7 :05 PM ET on ESPN

Starting Pitchers

MIN: S. Baker (2-2, 4.81)
DET: M. Scherzer (1-1, 2.63)

The Detroit Tigers will look to even the series when they host the reigning AL Central champs the Minnesota Twins for game two of a three-game series at Comerica Park on Wednesday.

The two teams squared off in the first matchup since last season’s one-game playoff on Tuesday night with the Twins coming away with a 2-0 win behind a solid pitching performance from Francisco Liriano.

The lefty struck out 10, walked one and kept the Tigers hitless until giving up four hits in the fifth on his way to eight scoreless innings. Detroit starter Verlander was pretty good, too, giving up an unearned run, while striking out seven over 5 2-3 innings.

The pitching duel held the clubs scoreless through five with the only runs of the contest coming by way of a pair of Detroit errors.

Tigers’ slugger Miguel Cabrera, who entered the series with a .363 batting average and a major league-best 24 RBIs, went 1-for-4 while reigning AL MVP Joe Mauer, who went 8 for 16 against the Royals raising his team-leading batting average to .382, was 0-for-5 at the plate.

Mauer is hitting .378 with three homers and nine RBIs.

The division-leading Twins will go with right-hander Scott Baker.

After making it through only 4-2/3 innings in his season debut at Anaheim, the 28-year old followed up with back-to-back wins against the White Sox and Kansas City before posting a 8-1 loss against Cleveland in his last outing, giving up 10 hits and six earned runs in just 5-2/3 innings. Baker was 1-1 with a 6.23 ERA in five starts against the Tigers last season.

Detroit will counter with righty Max Scherzer in Wednesday’s contest.

The Diamonds Rookie of the Year was traded to Detroit in December 2009 and has only one win in four starts this season.

Unfortunately, his 1-1 record does not show how well he has pitched. As long as he keeps pitching like this, he is bound to pile up wins with a solid Tigers offense.

The 25-year old Scherzer has not recorded any stats against the Twins in his career.

Both teams will need to get their offense going for game two. The Tigers will look to find a little life behind Johnny Damon who extended his hit streak to 14, while Minnesota will hope that Justin Morneau can get back on the rails after striking out in each of his three at-bats in game one after reaching base in each of the Twins first 19 games, hitting in 16 of them.
