Looks like the only way to the Pirates are going to be able to make up any ground is head to head so this series should be good.

Pittsburgh

The Pirates were pretty impressive in sweeping the Dodgers over the weekend. It might have meant nothing in reality but you have to think a series victory like that kind of confirms that they are right there behind the Cardinals. Its just not fair that they have the second best record but may have to settle for the Wild Card.

The Pirates have one of the best pitching staffs in the league but with the starters showing some cracks they need to get more from the lineup. Andrew McCutcheon is enjoying another MVP like season but he needs more help. I love the balance of their lineup but it would be nice if Pedro Alvarez could get hot.

Jeff Locke is probably the least intimidating of the Pirates starters but he is mostly effective. The Pirates are 12-9 when he starts (1-1 against the Cards). He has not been as sharp lately but the Pirates have been playing well and won his last three outings. More often than not he keeps his team in the game but on the road he has been getting hit pretty hard.

St. Louis

It kind of feels like the Cardinals never lose but they are only winning about 70% of the time. They actually enter the series off a loss but don’t be too harsh on them, they had pitched shutouts for three games in  row before that. I like their pickup of Brandon Moss but they probably still need more offense.

These two elite teams have split the 10 games between them this season. This is the first of three remaining series and every time these teams have hookep up of late the drama has been pretty good.

The Cardinals were excited to Carlos Martinez in the rotation for the whole season but I am not sure they expected the returns would be this good. Even though Adam Wainwright is out I am not sure they would have though he would lead the team in wins and ERA. I think there could be a fade coming though as he has never thrown so many innings in the big leagues.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • Over is 8-2 in PIT last 10 games following a win.
  • PIT are 47-22 in their last 69 overall.
  • PIT are 47-22 in their last 69 games on grass.
  • STL are 55-19 in their last 74 home games.
  • STL are 58-22 in their last 80 games as a favorite.
  • Under is 36-14-2 in STL last 52 home games.

4* MLB Betting Prediction:

The pitching matchup definitely favours STL in G1

MLB Baseball Score Prediction:  Pittsburgh 5 – St. Louis 4

I am looking to Pittsburgh to carry their momentum into this series and take game one. Look for lots of one run games and to play underdogs all series long.
