Atlanta Braves (31-26 through June 2)
Tim Hudson (4-4, 3.75)

What to make of the Atlanta Braves? They were supposed to be a major World Series contender this season. They look the part…sort of. The pitching is up to snuff. They lead baseball with a 3.01 team ERA and 1.15 team WHIP. Tim Hudson’s highly respectable 3.75 ERA is more than two runs higher than Jair Jurrjens’ team-leading mark. Runs are hard to come by against Atlanta.

Unfortunately, runs have been hard to come by for the Braves’ offense, too. Brian McCann has been his usual All-Star self at the dish (.309, 6 HR, 30 RBI in 51 games) but hasn’t had the help he was supposed to in the “revamped” Braves offense.

Jason Heyward was supposed to lead the charge but remains sidelined with an inflamed shoulder. The real problem, of course, has been big offseason acquisition Dan Uggla. He’s often been a slow starter but this is getting ridiculous. Uggla’s .175 average is minor league-caliber.

New York Mets (26-30 through June 2)
R.A. Dickey (2-6, 4.39)

The Mets have been the picture of mediocrity this season, largely because their starting staff stinks and also because of injuries to key hitters David Wright and Ike Davis. But their more optimistic fans are hoping Thursday’s dramatic victory is a season turning point. The Miracle Mets rallied from a 7-0 deficit to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bet on MLB at BetOnline

Can they build on the win against a Braves team that has won 21 of the last 29 meetings?

MLB Trends:

Under is 12-5-2 in ATL last 19 overall.
Under is 12-5-2 in ATL last 19 on grass.
Over is 11-2-1 in NYM last 14 overall.
Over is 11-2-1 in NYM last 14 on grass.
Over is 6-2-1 in NYM last 9 home games.
Under is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings in New York.
ATL are 10-3 in the last 13 meetings.

The pick:

The Mets are swinging better bats than the Braves right now but also face a tougher opponent in Hudson, who is 13-6 against them over 20 career starts. Can Hudson get past Carlos Beltran, though? He’s 25 for 70 (.357) with four homers and 16 RBI in his career.

R.A. Dickey hasn’t won at home this season but maybe the Braves will be his tonic. They’ve rocked him for a .323 team average all-time but no current Brave has a single homer off Dickey in his career and their hitters just don’t have much confidence right now. I like the Mets, who are hitting the ball better, in a minor home upset.

Braves vs Mets prediction: Mets 4, Braves 3
