MLB Betting – Mets, Pelfrey get their first look at Halladay, Mets

If you’ve ever received big Kentucky Derby payouts, you know how Philadelphia felt when they finally landed Roy Halladay from Toronto, the major thoroughbred in the offseason sweepstakes.  The Phillies will send their ace, coming off his first loss, out to the mound on Saturday when they host the streaking New York Mets, who will give the ball to a pitcher with newfound confidence.

Mets vs Phillies odds – Saturday, May 1, 7:05 PM ET

Mike Pelfrey (4-0, 0.69) is on an absolute roll right now, extending his streak to 24 scoreless innings in a 1-0 win at home over Atlanta, tossing a five-hitter over five innings.  Pelfrey struck out three batters, while walking five, which was the main negative in this performance but he managed to get out of any jams he got in.  The 26-year-old righthander has been inconsistent over his three-year career, but he’s off to a great start in 2010.  Pelfrey will be making his 10th career start against the Phillies, and so far, he has a 4-2 record against the Mets’ National League East rivals, posting a 4.82 ERA.  Pelfrey would be a longshot when it comes to Kentucky Derby odds, and he needs to show he can sustain this pace, or not fall off too much.

Halladay (4-1, 1.80) finally showed a chink in the armor in a 5-1 loss in San Francisco, allowing five runs on 10 hits over seven innings, while striking out five without a walk.  You won’t see many outings like this from the 2003 American League Cy Young winner, who currently leads the National League in innings.  Considering that four of Halladay’s five starts have come on the road, he’s been doing pretty well so far in the City of Brotherly Love.  “Doc” has made four career starts against the Mets, going 2-2 with an ERA of 5.55, but now, he has the knowledge of the Phillies’ staff who have faced the Mets countless times.

MLB odds should favor the Phillies at home, where they have beaten the Mets in seven of their last 10 games.  Heading into the series opener on Friday, the Mets had won seven in a row and their pitching staff has been much better than anyone thought it would be.  This is their first up-close-and-personal look at Halladay, who threw a gem in his lone home start.  Pelfrey has made two appearances on the road, a shutout of Colorado, and a relief appearance in their 20-inning marathon in St. Louis.  Hitters may be in for a long night in this contest, but the Phillies get the edge here as Pelfrey as a 7.17 ERA at Citizens Bank Park.
