New York Yankees (3-2 through April 6)
Phil Hughes (0-1, 11.25)

The New York Yankees have a golden opportunity to bury the struggling Boston Red Sox in the American League East this weekend. Is Phil Hughes the right man to get things started? The youngster, fresh off a breakout 2010 in which he won 18 games, struggled in his 2011 debut. The Tigers hammered him for five runs and two homers over five innings.

Fenway Park hasn’t been hospitable to Hughes. While he’s 2-1 there, he has a 6.00 lifetime ERA there. If Hughes struggles, he can at least hope for some solid run support. Mark Teixeira in particular has flown out of the gate, leading the majors with 10 RBI through Thursday’s action. Alex Rodriguez is swinging a hot bat of his own.

Boston Red Sox (0-6 through April 7)
John Lackey (0-1, 22.09)

The bizarre play on Wednesday in which the Red Sox gave the Indians a run by accidentally taking away a force out at home during an attempted double play summarizes how nightmarish their start has been. 0-6? For the supposed best Red Sox team ever?

John Lackey was a train wreck in his season debut, allowing a whopping nine earned runs in 3.2 innings. He was 11-5 at Fenway Park last season, so he’ll hope to bounce back on Friday. Many of the Yankee hitters, however, have a history of knocking Lackey around. Teixeira in particular is a certified Lackey killer, batting .351 with two homers and 11 RBI over 57 at-bats against him.

MLB Trends:

Over is 6-2-1 in NYY last 9 road games.
Over is 8-3-1 in NYY last 12 overall.
Over is 8-3-1 in NYY last 12 on grass.
Over is 13-4-1 in BOS last 18 Fri. games.
Over is 7-3 in BOS last 10 overall.
Over is 7-3 in BOS last 10 on grass.
Over is 37-15-1 in the last 53 meetings in Boston.

The pick:

Sooner or later, the Red Sox have to start winning games, but Lackey’s spotty history against the Yankee hitters means the BoSox are still a shaky play. On the other hand, David Ortiz, Jacoby Ellsbury and J.D. Drew all hit .400 or better against Hughes for their careers. Sooner or later, Boston has to win a game, doesn’t it? This is getting ridiculous. Maybe a date with their greatest rivals will snap them out of their funk?

Yankees vs Red Sox prediction: Red Sox 6, Yankees 4

I think this is a good pick. I like Lackey at home in front of a raucous Btown crowd.
