Saturday MLB Interleague Betting – Blue Jays vs Reds Preview & Pick

The Toronto Blue Jays are more or less where we thought they’d be at this point of the season, not truly contending in the American League East but remaining a competitive pest for the juggernauts.

Toronto Blue Jays (34-35 through June 16)
Brandon Morrow (2-4, 5.63)

The Jays continue to swing big stickS, ranking fourth in the majors in runs per game. Jose Bautista has definitely cooled off – his numbers are now just on par with other MVP candidates instead of light years ahead of the competition – but, boy, is Adam Lind ever picking up the slack. He quietly has 42 RBI in just 44 games this season. Since his return from the DL, Lind is batting .429 with seven homers and 15 RBI in 12 games.

Pitching is where the Jays have fallen short this season. Brandon Morrow has been a huge disappointment. The bigtime talent has allowed one, six, zero and nine earned runs over his last four starts. He’s extremely inconsistent.

Cincinnati Reds (37-33 through June 16)
Edinson Volquez (4-2, 5.48)

Here come the Reds. Cincy has stopped the bleeding and is creeping back toward contention in the National League Central, winning the last three games of its road trip. The turnaround is understandable. The Reds have hammered the ball all season, most notably Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, but their pitching had been awful until recently. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

In their last 10 games, the Reds haven’t allowed more than four runs once. Edinson Volquez is still a somewhat erratic pitcher but has been decent in his two starts since being sent down to the minors.

MLB Trends:

Over is 14-4-3 in TOR last 21 Sat. games.
Over is 7-2-1 in TOR last 10 road games.
Over is 7-2-1 in TOR last 10 on grass.
Over is 18-7-3 in CIN last 28 home games.
CIN are 23-10 in their last 33 Sat. games.
Over is 18-6-3 in Volquezs last 27 home starts.

The pick:

This feels like a mirror match. Both teams have powerful lineups and both teams send talented yet wild pitchers to the hill.

I think this matchup comes down to the long ball. Volquez has had some trouble keeping the ball in the park this season. Despite Morrow’s struggles, his stuff remains hard to hit. He has 66 strikeouts and just two homers allowed in 54.1 innings this season.

Considering that Morrow has also been great on the road this year (2-0, 2.31 ERA, no homers allowed), I like the Jays on Saturday.

Blue Jays vs Reds pick: Blue Jays 5, Reds 3
