The Cleveland Indians travel to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to begin a three game series with the Phillies starting tonight at 7:05 P.M. This will be the Indians first trip ever to Philly since interleague play began back in 1997.

As most people expected, Cleveland’s season so far has stumbled along as they are already 13 ½ games out of first place in the AL Central with an overall record of 26-42. The Indians are just as bad at home (12-20) as they are on the road (14-22) so it really does not matter where they play. As an underdog, a very common occurrence this season, they are 22-32 ATS. Against the over/under line they are 33-31-4.

On the mound tonight for Cleveland is one of their better hurlers; Mitch Talbot. In 13 starts, the rookie right hander has gone 7-5 with an ERA of 4.21. In his last outing he only lasted 5.2 innings giving up 13 hits and eight earned runs in a loss to Mets. He will be making his first career start against the Phillies.

Cleveland’s lineup has a team batting average of .249, ranking them 10th in the AL. Their 287 runs scored; an average of 4.22 per game ranks them 11th in the league. Shin-Soo Choo leads the team with 76 hits and 33 RBI’s. Jhonny Peralta also has 33 RBI’s and 63 hits while Russell Branyan leads the team with nine home runs.

Philadelphia was able to take two out of three from the Yankees last week, but promptly went out and dropped two out of three to Minnesota over the weekend. The Phillies are currently 35-32 overall, 5 ½ games in back of Atlanta in the NL East. They are 17-15 SU at home and 24-23 ATS as a favorite. Against the over/under line they are 29-37-1. The total has stayed under in three of their last five games.

Veteran left hander Jamie Moyer will get the start tonight for Philadelphia. He has pitched for the decision in all 13 of his previous starts and has a record of 7-6 with an ERA of 4.76. He had a strong showing his last time out, going eight innings and giving up only three hits and two earned runs in a win over the Yankees. Lifetime against the Indians he is 7-1 with a 3.01 ERA.

The Phillies are starting to get a bit more consistency from their lineup, but they are still ranked 11th in the NL with a team batting average of .256. They are ranked ninth in runs scored with 308; an average of 4.60 per game. Ryan Howard leads the team with 78 hits, 51 RBI’s, and 14 home runs. Placido Polanco is second in hits with 76 and Jayson Werth is second in RBI’s with 43.

The Philadelphia bats have a golden opportunity to continue to work their way out of a slump against a rookie pitcher that has never faced them before. As for the other starter, the 47 year old Moyer should be able to keep this Cleveland lineup at bay long enough for the Phillies’ relievers to come in seal the win.
