The Yankees and Astros played to a pitchers’ duel Monday night in the series opener as both teams try to hold on in their respective divisions. New York eventually capitalized on their many opportunities as Carlos Beltran hit a walk off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th to lead the Yankees to a 1-0 win.

With the win, New York is now once again tied with Toronto for first place in the AL East.

The Astros now sit only 3.5 up on the Rangers and 5.0 up on the Angels in the AL West.

Houston will try to even this series up with ace LH Dallas Keuchel on the hill. The Yankees will counter with Ivan Nova.

New York has gone 8-3 in the last 11 games at home vs. the Astros. Houston is also struggling to hit the ball in night games as they bring an average of just .238 in to Tuesday’s contest.

Houston Astros

The Astros have dodged many bullets this year to get to where they currently sit. A lot of cold streaks have been canceled out by hot streaks. Right now though, the team is in the middle of some cold hitting.

The offense is hitting just .235 in road games and Houston has scored 3 runs or less in 11 of their last 13. Thanks to some solid pitching, Houston still holds a lead in the AL West.

They should see more of that good pitching on Tuesday when they send LH Dallas Keuchel to the mound, an AL Cy Young candidate.

Keuchel has pitched right up there with the top tier pitchers in baseball as brings in a record of 14-6 with an ERA of only 2.37.

However his road play has been the most suspect this season as he is 3-6 in 11 road contests with an 3.50 ERA.

Keuchel allowed 2 runs on 7 hits in 7.0 innings last start against Tampa, but received a ND in the outing.

New York Yankees

New York didn’t do too much at the trade deadline. They felt their team was good enough and in a solid position to finish off the AL East race in the 2nd half of the season. They started off real sluggish in August and allowed Toronto to close the gap quickly.

Now, sitting with a first place tie in the AL East, New York looks to take back the lead as they go for their 2nd straight win on Tuesday.

New York had plenty of chances in the series opener, but failed for 8 innings to push anything across. They then loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th and Carlos Beltran sent everybody home happy with a sacrifice place.

With C.C. Sabathia now on the DL with knee problems, the pressure shifts to Tuesday’s starter, Ivan Nova, even more.

[dfads params=’groups=63745&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]

Nova brings in a record of 5-5 with an ERA of 3.72 on the season. He lost his 2nd time in 3 outings as he allowed Cleveland to score 3 runs in 5.0 innings of work in a 3-2 loss inside Yankee Stadium last time out.

Nova has faced Houston one time and last 5.2 innings allowing 2 runs and 5 walks, but received a win in the decision.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • Astros are 5-2 in their last 7 overall.
  • Astros are 2-5 in Keuchels last 7 starts as a favorite of -110 to -150.
  • Astros are 1-6 in Keuchels last 7 road starts.
  • Yankees are 7-3 in their last 10 vs. American League West.
  • Yankees are 4-1 in their last 5 Tuesday games.
