Houston Astros (0-7) at St. Louis Cardinals (5-2)

8:15 PM ET on ESPN2

Starting Pitchers

Huston: Meyers (0-0, 6.00 ERA)
St. Louis: Penny (0-0, 1.29 ERA)

The Houston Astros will be looking for their first win of the season as they face off against the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday in game two of a three game series at Busch Stadium.

The Astros’ winless record through seven games is their worst start since 1983, when the team didn’t win until its 10th game. They have been outscored 42-17. The Cardinals in the meantime have lost just two thus far and are averaging nearly eight runs per game. One reason for Houston’s miserable start is the absence of power hitter Lance Berkman. The first baseman is out recovering from knee surgery, and is not slated to return until later this month.

Game one between these two teams ended with the Cardinals shutting out the Astros’ 5-0 on Monday in their home opener. Albert Pujols, went 2-for-3, driving in the first run of the game with an RBI single in the first, and then followed up with a three-run homerun in the third to give the Redbirds a 4-0 lead. Ryan Ludwick’s RBI triple in the seventh capped the scoring and the win.

Houston struggled at the dish, combining for just seven hits in 31 at-bats.

Veteran righty Brad Penny will get the call in Wednesday’s contest. Penny, who after spending time with both Boston and San Francisco in 2009, made his debut with the Astros on Apr 8 with a 2-1 loss at Cincinnati. Penny surrendered just a single run on six hits while waking two and striking out four in seven solid innings on the mound. He is 1-2 against the Cardinals in five career starts with a 5.45 ERA.

The Astros will put their hopes of notching their first win of 2010 on the experience of RHP Brett Meyers who recorded his first loss of the season against San Francisco in a 10-4 loss. Meyers left the game in the sixth giving up four earned runs on 12 hits –including a solo home run, while issuing one free pass and fanning three. He is 4-2 against St. Louis lifetime, with an ERA of 5.45 in 11 starts.

Betting Trends:

The total has gone UNDER in 5 of St. Louis’s last 5 games when playing at home against Houston
St. Louis is 10-2 SU in its last 12 games when playing at home against Houston
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of St. Louis’s last 11 games when playing Houston
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of St. Louis’s last 5 games
The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Houston’s last 5 games when playing on the road against St. Louis
The total has gone UNDER in 9 of Houston’s last 11 games when playing St. Louis
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Houston’s last 5 games on the road
The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Houston’s last 6 games

With the Astros struggling offensively it’s difficult to see then pulling off a win here. However, the day off in between games could be just what the Astros’ need to get on track. Nevertheless I expect the Cardinals to win this one by at least five runs.
