The Seattle Mariners invade Petco Park to begin a short 2 game inter league series with the San Diego Padres. Both teams came into the 2015 season with high hopes after retooling their respective rosters.

However, to this point that hasn’t been the case as both teams have struggled mightily, especially as of late. The Mariners will send LH Mike Montgomery to the hill to oppose Ian Kennedy for the Padres.

Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres

Things have been less than stellar for both teams as of late. Both teams have key players struggling, starting pitchers laboring, and the Padres have even made a manager switch this early in the season.

Still, both teams remain optimistic that they have the talent to turn things around and that starts with this series.

Seattle has lost in 5 of their last 7 and have fallen a season high 8 games under the break-even mark. They’ve seen the 200 million dollar Robinson Cano hit just .214 on the season and Nelson Cruz has lost all his power from his hot start. With their recent struggles, Seattle finds themselves 9.5 off the pace for first place in the AL West and just 1 game in front of last place Oakland.

To try and get this thing turned around they’ll send Mike Montgomery to the hill on Tuesday. Montgomery comes in off an absolute gem of a performance against the Royals that saw him go a complete game shutout while striking out 10.

In four of his first five starts, Montgomery has allowed 2 runs or fewer.

For the Padres, they find themselves just 6.5 off the pace in the AL West, which isn’t bad all things considered. They’ll send the inconsistent Ian Kennedy to the mound on Tuesday.

Kennedy is just 4-6 on the season with an ERA of 5.09. However, over his last 5 starts, the right hander is 2-1 and has allowed just 8 runs over that span.

The good news for San Diego is that they’ve seen OF Matt Kemp heat up as of late. Kemp has 7 hits over his last 16 at bats with 2 home runs and 5 runs batted in. Along with Kemp, SS Clint Barmes is heating up as he’s gone 9 for 23 in his last 8 games.

The two teams split a two game series in Seattle back in May.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Mariners are 5-11 in their last 16 interleague games vs. a right-handed starter.
  • Mariners are 4-9 in their last 13 interleague games.
  • Padres are 5-2 in their last 7 games vs. a left-handed starter.
  • Padres are 35-16 in their last 51 games as a home favorite.

Free 4* MLB Pick: San Diego ML

The Padres are in a much better situation than the Mariners right now. They have some of their lineup starting to heat up and Ian Kennedy has been great recently. At this price, the Padres ML is a solid play.
