Detroit went on a nice run to get back in the AL Central race, but two straight losses at Texas earlier this week didn’t help them. The team got back on the winning track by taking the first game of this series last night. Verlander has been brilliant again this season, but the rest of the Tigers pitching staff hasn’t been good at all. The offense is much better when Austin Jackson is healthy and leading off. Jackson leads the team with a .325 batting average and an amazing .411 on-base-percentage. Miguel Cabrera is hitting .312 and Prince Fielder is batting .300. The Tigers have a dangerous lineup. Tampa Bay has really hit the skids of late. The Rays held their own nicely for the first couple months while dealing with numerous injuries, but they have lost four straight games and 7 of their last 9. Evan Longoria is still out of the lineup, and Matt Joyce went on the disabled list ten games ago. The Rays are just 3-7 since Joyce has been out of the lineup. Tampa Bay simply doesn’t have enough pop or run producers in the middle of the lineup right now. The team needs David Price to step up and be the stopper. They still have a solid record, but their recent slump has dropped them to fourth in the difficult AL East.
It’s always tough to bet against Justin Verlander, and the Rays offense is really short-handed right now. Price will likely pitch well, but he has a difficult Tigers lineup to try to tame. I like Detroit’s chances here.
