Detroit Tigers vs. N.Y. Yankees Gambling Prediction & MLB Preview

Tigers (68-45) vs Yankees (57-56)

Detroit is wicked hot right now. Not only have they won 12 games in a row but they just walked into the second place team in their division’s house – Cleveland – to take the last 4. They have now built a 7 game cushion and asserted their dominance over the division.

Friday August 9
Yankee Stadium – Bronx, NY
Probable Starters:
DET: Rick Porcelllo (R)
NYY: Ivan Nova (R)
Moneyline: Detroit -120, New York +110
Over/Under: 8

This team is truly clicking on all cylinder winning every which way. Yesterday they just clubbed the Indians with 8 RBI from 3B Miguel Cabrera, 1B Prince Fielder, and DH Victor Martinez. Suffice it to say the middle of their lineup is deadly.

There is no getting around it – Rick Porcello is the Tigers 5th starter. However, he might be the best 5th starter in the Majors, with an ability to look like an ace from time to time.

The Tigers have won his last 5 starts and in three of those games he has pitched 7 innings and given up 0 or 1 ER. Porcello is a classic case of where you have to look deeper than the surface stats.

If you look at his game logs you will see that in April against the Angels he gave up 9ER without pitching an inning. That is difficult to overcome (P.S. He also got rocked in another start against L.A. so skip him if matched up against them again)

New York

The New York Yankees have fallen out of the race in the American League of late. They are limping back home on a 4 game losing streak having been swept by the Chicago White Sox, one of the worst teams in the league this season. Now it seems their play on the field is mirroring the shenanigans off it. At least now that A-Rod is back there is a reason to watch though. I love booing that guy and I am sure you do too, even if it is through your television set.

Ivan Nova has been the Yankees best pitcher not named Kuroda over the last coulple of months – not bad considering there are guys named C.C. Sabathia and Andy Pettite on the roster.

Nova has given up just 1ER in his last 14 innings but has just a 1-1 record to show for it as the Yankees have been sputtering at the plate of late. He faced Detroit in his opening start of the season in April and was not very effective. To be fair, his whole month of April was not very good but he has been much better since returning to the team after a month away

Normally I would be all over fading a streak like this, especially on the road but the Yankees are truly uninspired right now. Yes they might get a jolt from the home crowd but things could also get ugly vis a vis A-Rod and all.

I would like Detroit more if they had one of their better starters on the mound but Porcello can keep things going.

O/U: Over
Score Prediction: Detroit 6 – New York 3
