St. Louis comes into this series with a 5-5 record in its last 10 games and a half a game out of first in the NL Central behind the surprising Pittsburgh Pirates. The Cardinals are 50-45 overall; 25-21 at home and 25-24 on the road.

With Albert Pujols back in the lineup, St. Louis has its offensive firepower back to full strength, but defensively it may have lost utility infielder Nick Punto for the season with an elbow injury. Pujols early return has been a welcome sight after tallying 10 RBI and three home runs in eight games.

Kyle McClellan is scheduled to get the start for the Cardinals. The right hander is 6-6 with an ERA of 4.24 in 15 previous starts. Last time out against Arizona, he got tagged with the loss after giving up three earned runs on six hits in seven innings of work.

New York fell back below .500 after falling to the Marlins 4-1 as a 118 home favorite in a make-up game on Monday. The Mets are now 47-48 on the year and 12 games in back of Philadelphia in the NL East. They are 27-23 on the road, but just 20-25 at Citi Field this year. The injury bug has stunned New York the past few weeks with Jose Reyes already on the 15-DL and Scott Hairston and Carlos Beltran still listed as questionable for Tuesday’s Game 1. The Mets lineup has kept them in the game this season with a .262 team batting average and 418 total runs scored. The good news is that Reyes is expected to be ready
to go for the start of this series.

R.A. Dickey should be on the mound for New York on Wednesday night. His last outing was not one of his best after giving up four runs on six hits in seven innings in a loss to the Phillies. Dickey is 4-8 overall on the year with a 3.70 ERA, but 2-1 with an ERA of 3.32 in the month of July.

This series will be the first meeting between these two this season. Last year they split six games 3-3 with each going 2-1 at home. The total was evenly split as well, but did go ‘over’ in three of the final four games they played.

This time around, stick with the Cardinals’ lineup to get to Dickey early enough to take advantage of the Mets’ bullpen and get the win.

MLB Gambling Trends:

Over is 55-26-7 in NYM last 88 Wed. games.
Under is 7-1 in Dickeys last 8 Wed. starts.
NYM are 3-9 in Dickeys last 12 home starts.
