ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Red Sox (34-41) had been unsuccessful in scoring more than three runs in eight straight games before beating the Oakland Athletics in 10-innings on Sunday.

Boston busted out of a long offensive slump scoring seven runs against the A’s and will now have to face another strong pitching staff when they visit the Seattle.

Seattle (39-36) is coming off a three-game sweep of the Kansas City Royals, and has won six of its last eight games.

The pitching staff held opponents to one run in five of those six wins and will aim to hold Boston’s lineup in check come Monday.

In order to do so, the Mariners will send right-hander Felix Hernandez to the mound in game one. Hernandez has allowed no more than two runs in 11 straight starts, but is winless in his last three.

The former American League Cy Young Award recipient has pitched well against the Red Sox, with a 7-2 record and a 3.00 ERA in 14 career starts.

Boston will counter with veteran John Lackey who has gone at least eight innings in three of his last four starts, including nine scoreless innings against Minnesota on Tuesday. Lackey struck out nine and allowed three hits in that one.

He faced Seattle once in 2013 and surrendered three runs over seven innings without factoring in the decision.

Lackey will need to be sharp against Boston’s usual suspects of David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts, who despite being in the midst of a hitting slump have the potential to explode any time.

In the meantime, Mike Napoli has picked up the slack, and clubbed a home run on Sunday.

Notes

1. Red Sox RF Shane Victorino (hamstring) was supposed to rejoin the team on the road trip, but his return has been pushed back after missing four straight rehab games due to stiffness.
2. Seattle C Mike Zunino has homered in both of his last two starts.
3. Boston RHP Burke Badenhop had a string of 32 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run come to an end on Sunday.

Matt’s Free Prediction: Mariners

The Red Sox are not very good on the road, and are 15-22 away from Boson and 5-5 in their last 10 games.

Seattle is 6-2 in their last eight games.

And even though Boston has won their last six meetings with Seattle, I expect this one to go to the home team.
