ATS Matchup Insight | CappersPicks Insider Preview

The Red Sox (34-38) bats have been held silent as of late, and in their last outing they tallied just a single hit , until David Ortiz and Mike Napoli hit back-to-back home runs in the 10th inning to beat the Twins 2-1.

With that, the Red Sox have now gone five straight games scoring two or fewer runs.

They will look to turn that around when they open a 10-game road trip at the AL-best Oakland Athletics who are winners of four of their last five.

Oakland (44-28) has continued to get solid pitching from its starters and its bullpen, and has gotten a jolt offensively from a lineup that has had little trouble scoring with an average of 7.4 runs in their last five.

As a team the Athletics pitching staff has an ERA of 3.03 with the starters at 3.07 and the bullpen at 2.95.

The A’s will look to continue their domination of the league by sending lefty Scott Kazmir to the mound in game one. Kazmir has not allowed an earned run in either of his last two starts, and is 3-0 in his last four appearances.

The 30-year-old made only a single start against the Red Sox with Cleveland last season and did not factor in the decision while allowing two runs in five innings.

Boston will try and slow down the A’s offense by countering with veteran Jake Peavy who has gone six straight starts allowing at least three earned runs, including six one-run innings against the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.

It was a much better outing for Peavy, who coughed up three home runs in his previous outing. He has made only two career starts against Oakland, going 1-0 with three runs allowed in 15 total innings.

Notes

1. The Red Sox have yet to announce a starter for Friday’s game after scheduled starter Brandon Workman had his six-game suspension upheld and began serving it Wednesday.
2. Oakland RF Josh Reddick (hyperextended right knee) began a rehab stint at Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.
3. Boston closer Koji Uehara had a string of 20 straight scoreless appearances come to an end Wednesday.

Matt’s Free Prediction: A’s

The Red Sox are 5-12 in the last 17 meetings of these two, and with the A’s being the big favorite here , I don’t’ see them having any trouble in this one.
