To stay alive in Game 6, Detroit needs a more complete effort from starter-to-bullpen.
That means Jose Valverde has to be rested and ready to bounce back from the 11th-inning homer he served to Nelson Cruz in Game 4. It also means Max Scherzer must solve his Cruz woes.
Scherzer, a very talented pitcher, has actually been quite good in the 2011 playoffs. He was mostly solid in Game 2, striking out six over six innings of three-run ball. Including the regular season, he’s never lost to Texas in seven career outings. Still, homers are a problem for Scherzer – he allowed 29 in the regular season – and he served up a long ball when it mattered most in Game 2, letting Texas tie the game. He must find a way to keep the ball in the park if he wants to win on Saturday night.
Texas Rangers (lead series 3-2)
Derek Holland (1-0, 4.00)
There’s no denying that Derek Holland is maturing into a great pitcher. He was an elite prospect coming up, so it’s no surprise that the lefty went 9-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 14 starts after the All-Star break.
However, Holland is still only 25 and has just one good, full season as a starting pitcher to his name. It’s questionable if he can handle the pressure of an elimination game yet. He was serviceable in Game 2 of the ALDS against Tampa but got chased after 2.2 innings in Game 2 of the ALCS against Detroit after allowing three runs and walking four. The pick:
The matchup just might be right for Detroit to force Game 7. Again, there’s no denying Holland’s ability, but he’s inexperienced in this type of situation. He also allowed 19 homers to right-handed hitters. Miguel Cabrera, Jhonny Peralta, Delmon Young, Brandon Inge, Ryan Raburn, Victor Martinez (switch) – almost every Tiger hitter swings from the right side. Young might be the biggest threat of all after clubbing two homers in Game 5.
Look for Detroit to solve Holland and give Scherzer the run support he needs to keep the series alive.
