Over the past several seasons following the Pittsburgh Steelers has been like taking a ride on a roller coaster. They won the Super Bowl in 2005 and followed that season up with a 8-8 regular season record, missing the playoffs.

They won the Super Bowl again in 2008, following that up with a 9-7 record last season missing the playoffs again.

If this is an indication of a pattern, then 2010 should be an up year for the Steelers, but given everything this team has been through this past offseason, there is a very real chance for a steeper decline this year.

The primary sword hanging over this team’s head is the Ben Roethlisberger situation. The All Pro quarterback has been suspended for a minimum of four games and possibly six for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. In his place are two veterans; Charlie Batch and Byron Leftwich battling it out for the starting job. If that prospect is not scary enough, what happens when Roethlisberger comes back to an apparently fragmented locker room with players clearly taking sides in the whole mess?

Head coach Mike Tomlin has a strong enough personality to hold this team together, but if some early losses start piling up the whole situation could very easily implode.

Other issues on offense include the team’s situation at WR. Santonio Holmes, their leading receiver in yards last season with 1,248 was traded to the Jets and Hines Ward, their leading receiver in actual receptions with 95, is 34 and entering his 13th season in the league. The Steelers still have TE Heath Miller and WR Mike Wallace and they drafted Emmanuel Sanders in the third round, but this is not a championship caliber core of receivers.

RB Rashard Mendenhall , who rushed for 1,108 yards last season will once again be counted on to carry the load this year with Willie Parker now with the Redskins. This does not bode well for a team that was ranked 19th in the league in rushing offense with Parker on the team.

The Steelers defense finished the season ranked fifth overall and third against the run, but they were ranked 13th in total points allowed and 16th against the pass. Second round draft pick Jason Worilds and fourth round pick Thaddeus Gibson add some depth up front and DB Bryant McFadden, signed as a free agent from Arizona, to help bolster the secondary, but there are still some big holes to fill in other key spots in the lineup.

It is hard to know how much damage Roethlisberger has done to the internal workings of this team. Football is as much to do about team chemistry as it is about X’s and O’s. Time will tell once he returns as the starter later in the year, but by then too much damage may have already been done to salvage the season.

2010 Prediction: 3rd in the AFC North
