Kansas City Current Odds to Win:
Chiefs AFC West Odds – 13/2
Chiefs AFC Championship Lines – 45/1
Chiefs 2011 Super Bowl Futures – 80/1
Kansas City Chiefs Season Over/Under Win Total – 6

In 2006 Kansas City went 9-7 and made the playoffs as a wildcard. Since that season the Chiefs have only managed to win 10 games combined and only four at home. It is hard to pinpoint exactly what happened to this franchise over the past three years but suffice to say it has not been good.

2010 offers a season of hope and change for this team as they are finally bringing in some players that can actually make that happen.

Todd Haley begins his second year as head coach looking to build on some of the minor success they achieved last season. On a positive note they doubled their win total from 2008, but the downside to that is they only won four games last year. One of his immediate goals was to make this team leaner and faster to better compete in the AFC.

Another was to bring in some playmakers on both sides of the ball. Their offseason moves are clearly taking them in this direction.

QB Matt Cassel will also be starting his second year with the Chiefs after his breakout season in 2008 with New England.

With a year under his belt in Haley’s system he should be able to improve upon some rather dismal numbers from 2009. He only completed 55% of his passes and threw 16 interceptions against just 16 TD’s for a total of 2,924 yards.

WR Dwayne Bowe led the team in receptions last season with 47 and will be paired with Chris Chambers as the primary receiving threats. The Chiefs offensive attack will most likely revolve around their running game. This effort will be led by RB Jamaal Charles, who rushed for 1,120 yards on 190 carries for an impressive average of 5.9 yards per attempt.

They also drafted Mississippi running back Dexter McCluster in the second round of the draft to add some additional speed out of the backfield.

Defensively the Chiefs used the fifth overall pick in the draft to select SS Eric Berry from Tennessee. Berry has all the skills to make an immediate impact in a Kansas City secondary that was ranked 22nd against the pass. Another big move was the hiring of Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator. Crennel served as Bill Belichick’s coordinator in New England in the glory years of the early 2000’s.

While optimism is running high in Kansas City, the reality is this team is still missing too many pieces to effectively compete with the upper tier of teams in the AFC.

They are definitely moving in the right direction with a solid running game and improved defense but it is unlikely that this will be enough for any kind of dramatic turnaround in 2010.

2010 Prediction: 4th in the AFC West
Win Total: Under
