Arizona

The Cardinals are lucky to be in the NFC West where their struggles haven’t completely eliminated them from a return to the playoffs.  As it stands they are only a game out of first despite a complete mess at QB which has turned what was one of the most potent offenses in the league the last few season into anything but.  The Cardinals are coming into Sunday off of back to back losses and need to right the ship.

Arizona is the second worst offensive football team in the league averaging only 260 yards of offense per game.  A lot of that blame falls on the QB as the team has gone back and forth with Derek Anderson, but it doesn’t help that this team can’t run the ball either.  Worst of all they have not been able to utilize their best weapon WR Larry Fitzgerald.  At his current pace this will be his least productive season since his rookie year.  They just can’t seem to get him the ball where he can really make plays.

The Cardinals and the Vikings have met each of the last two seasons, splitting the games which were both in Arizona.  This year the Cardinals travel North looking for just their second road victory of the season.  The Cardinals are a hard team to handicap as they still have enough weapons to score the ball at a better than average level.  Their defense has also been inconsistent with three games limiting opponents to 20 or less points and three where they have given up 30 or more.

Minnesota

Where do you begin when discussing the Vikings.  Their record is surprising, Brett Favre has been horrible and they recently waived WR Randy Moss after having him on the team for a heartbeat.  Needless to say this season has not gone according to plan.  If any team wanted to press the reset button it would be these guys, right?  Unfortunately they can’t do that but if they can figure out a winning formula they still have a small chance in a not so great NFC.

As this is being written Brett Favre is listed as probable on the injury list for the Sunday.  While his starting the game may be probable the odds of him performing up to his standards are much worse.  Last week he threw no touchdowns with one interception, making it the fourth time in seven games this season he has been in the negative there.  I am not sure why Brad Childress still thinks putting in Tavaris Jackson would be such a bad option.  My guess is that he doesn’t have the authority to do so.

The Vikings have their backs against the wall this week.  If they want to remain in the playoff picture they absolutely have to win.  Their defense has been playing pretty well and as indicated earlier the Cardinals offense is a shell of what it has been in the past.  Also, Arizona is 29th in rush defense.  If you have the best RB in the league and were playing a team like that you shouldn’t even need to throw more than 15 times.  How much damage could Jackson really do with a game plan like that.

The Pick: The Vikings should win but I don’t like that spread.  That extra point makes me want to pack the Cardinals against a Minny team that has disappointed all season long.
