2011 NBA Futures Gambling: MVP Award

Here is a NBA preview along with the odds for the top hopefuls for the 2011 NBA MVP Award and the 2010/2011 season.

NBA Betting – 2010-11 MVP Futures

Here is a NBA Wagering preview along with the odds for the top 10 MVP hopefuls for the 2010/2011 season.

The 2010-11 NBA season should be a very interesting one for betting on MVP futures. Is the award Kevin Durant’s to lose? Does Kobe deserve more respect?

Could LeBron or D-Wade offer good value since oddsmakers may assume they’ll cancel each other out? Let’s have a look.

THE ELITE

Kevin Durant (+130)

Hard to go wrong with defending scoring champion and current scoring leader. Durant keeps getting better and he’s the total focal point of his team’s offense, so he’s an excellent choice.

LeBron James (+400)

Even though he hasn’t totally found a rhythm in Miami yet, he’s still King James. We have to assume LeBron will get his numbers by season’s end. Still, I wouldn’t pick him for the MVP since I do believe he and D-Wade will split any votes that go to Miami.

Kobe Bryant (+400)

It’s hard to believe Kobe, arguably one of the five best players in NBA history, only has one MVP to his name. It’s enough to make me hesitant about picking him. Perhaps because of his checkered past, voters seem to be biased against Kobe. Since the Lakers may also reduce his minutes to keep him fresher for the playoffs this season, he’s not my top choice.

Monta Ellis (+400)

These odds surprise the hell out of me. Ellis with the same odds as Kobe and LeBron? Come on. He’s a great scorer, averaging 25-plus points last season and this season, but will his team be good enough for him to win the award? Golden State won only 26 games last year. Then again, the Warriors are 7-4 this year and Ellis has solid support from Stephen Curry. It’s just too bad that Ellis offers “favorite” sportsbook value instead of sleeper value.

THE CONTENDERS

Dwight Howard (+600)

The two-time Defensive Player of the Year is always a threat to win the MVP. You could argue that he’s the most complete player on this list in terms of his impact at both ends of the court. But his offensive numbers aren’t quite as flashy as those of the guys above him on this list. The voters tend to lean toward the big scorers more often than not. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

Chris Paul (+600)

Paul flirted with the award a couple of seasons ago when he was the league’s most dominant point guard. This year, he wasn’t expected to be an MVP contender with the Hornets in transition and thinking about trading him. Suddenly, New Orleans is tops in the NBA with an 8-1 record. Maybe Paul can win it after all?

Dwyane Wade (+800)

Same situation as LeBron. Wade is fantastic but I can’t see either Miami guy getting enough votes to beat out a Durant or Kobe.

THE SLEEPER

Rajon Rondo (+1000)

There are plenty of sleepers out there, including Derrick Rose, Brandon Roy, Deron Williams and so on. But Rondo is my favorite. He’s part of an “angry” Boston team that has flown out of the gate, anxious to prove that Miami doesn’t have the NBA title locked up. Rondo leads the NBA in assists with an amazing 15.1 per game, putting him on pace to break John Stockton’s record single-season average of 14.5. He’s also right up with the league leaders in steals.

THE PICK

I’m on the Rondo bandwagon. He dominates games. If Steve Nash can win two MVPs as an elite playmaking guard and Rondo sets the assists record while also playing better defense, how can he not win? Go with the sleeper!

Pick: Rajon Rondo +1000
