2008-09 College Football Bowls Preview and Trends

Sports betting fanatics are just a few short weeks away from the beginning of the college football bowl season, and BetUS Sportsbook has everything covered you need to know from the EagleBank Bowl on December 20th to the BCS National Championship Game on January 8th.

When you’re talking about bowl games, you have to start with the SEC, which dominated the bowls last season, going 7-2 SU and 6-2-1 ATS. There’s a good possibility that SEC bettors won’t get to see quite as many of their teams in bowl games this year, as only six teams are currently bowl eligible, and may not have many more reach six wins in the next few weeks. The best prospects of joining the bowl bunch are Ole Miss and Auburn. The Rebels should become bowl eligible this week against Louisiana-Monroe, but the Tigers need to earn a win against either Georgia or Alabama to punch their second season tickets.

As for the Tide, they’ll likely be one of two teams out of the SEC to join the BCS, as both Alabama and Florida are still in the race for the National Championship. SEC teams are on a stretch of eight straight victories in BCS games and seven out of eight against the spread. Both Florida and Alabama have been stellar for football bettors this year, as both programs are a combined 14-5 ATS in ’08.

No BCS talk could be complete without opening up discussion within the Big XII. Without a doubt, the Big XII is the most stacked conference in America, with three legitimate contenders remaining alive for the National Championship. Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Texas are a combined 28-2 SU and 19-7-1 ATS this year. Last bowl season was fantastic against the college football betting line for Big XII teams. Missouri, Kansas, Texas Tech, Texas, and Oklahoma State were all big winners for their sports bettors, while only Oklahoma and Colorado posted losing tickets. This year, the Big XII should send either seven or eight teams bowling. Colorado needs a victory against either Oklahoma State or Nebraska to send itself to a bowl game for the fourth time in the L/5 years.

No conference will send more teams bowling than the ACC this year. Florida State, Wake Forest, Maryland, Boston College, North Carolina, Miami, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech are all already bowl eligible, but every team in the conference still has a chance to join its conference brethren bowling. Virginia is likely the only other team that will get it done, but it needs a win against either Clemson or VTECH in Blacksburg to give the ACC its ninth bowl team. That’s the price that the conference will pay for not having any with more than seven wins or a team ranked in the Top-15.

The biggest stories down the stretch in college football are going to be the roles of Boise State, Utah, and possibly Ball State in the BCS. It appears as though at least one of those three will bust the BCS and get a chance to take on one of the elite teams in the country. Both Utah and Boise State have stellar histories in the BCS, as they are a combined 2-0 SU and ATS in its appearances. With some more carnage amongst the top teams in America, both the Broncos and Utes could find themselves in the Top-6 in the BCS, which would guarantee each of them a chance to show their skills off to sports betting fans in the most illustrious bowl games in the country.

With less than a month remaining in the 2008-09 college football regular season, be sure to login to your BetUS Sportsbook account and join these teams in their quest to achieve top-notch bowl game consideration.
