New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers preview

Question: If the Jets could hit the control/alt/delete buttons and start all over again, would they play it the same way? Would they proclaim themselves Super Bowl bound even before the start of training camp? Would they woof every week through Thanksgiving Weekend, even knowing that a day of reckoning would come in the form of a schedule that included December games against New England, Pittsburgh and Chicago? Would they have just shut up and played?

If they had, they would not be the laughingstock they are today. They would be a solid 9-4 team with an almost certain ticket to the playoffs for the second straight year. They would be the Little Engine That Could, chugging uphill against the wind in and trying to knock off the big, bad Patriots in the AFC. They would be in the conversation with New England, Pittsburgh, San Diego, Baltimore and Indianapolis as teams with chances to be playing a game in February. Sports Betting at Sportsbook.com

They say it ain’t bragging if you back it up, and it’s clear that the 45-3 loss at New England in early December has this team rattled. The inability to bounce back at home against the Dolphins, as well as the KneeGate sideline issues, have knocked New York off its axis. Now the Jets are on defense daily as they simultaneously try to fend off criticism of poor sportsmanship and their inability to back up their boasts while at the same time try to repair a football operation that has hit the skids.

The first and foremost issue on their plate is what to do to restore the confidence of quarterback Mark Sanchez, who has laid two eggs in succession and has a bunch of receivers who can’t seem to catch the ball. Sanchez has freaked out in cold weather, which creates a dilemma for Rex Ryan: Since the Steelers are next to impossible to run against, how do the Jets move the ball with Sanchez throwing in the cold and wind in Pittsburgh? Tough one there.

Betting Trends:

Under is 11-3 in NYJ last 14 games in December.
Over is 7-2 in NYJ last 9 vs. AFC.
Over is 9-3 in NYJ last 12 games overall.
Over is 8-3 in PIT last 11 games in Week 15.
PIT are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games on grass.

The pick: It’s easy to say run the ball, but LaDainian Tomlinson appears to be running out of gas (49 yards on 19 carries last week) and Shonn Greene hasn’t been much better (8 carries, 17 yards vs. Miami). New York seems out of options.

The Steelers, meanwhile, have righted themselves after that embarrassing loss at home to the Patriots, and can win the AFC North and a first-round playoff bye if they run the table.

Lay the 6 as New York might go a third straight game without a touchdown.
