The Minnesota Vikings will try to play the role of spoiler when they travel to Lincoln Financial Field this Sunday night for a nationally televised showdown with Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:20 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on NBC.

The only drama left in Minnesota’s ‘season to forget’ is whether or not Brett Favre has anything left in his battered and broken body to make one last start. He suffered a concussion in last week’s loss to Chicago and is listed as doubtful, but we have been down that road a few times before with this guy.

If he cannot go, interim head coach Leslie Frazier will turn to rookie QB Joe Webb as his starter for a game that is completely meaningless to the Vikings other than the fact it is on national TV. Minnesota could potentially delay Philadelphia’s NFC East title celebration with a win, if the Giant had already beaten Green Bay earlier in the day. Other than that, this team has long since been relegated to playing out the string.

The Vikings come into this game at 5-9 straight-up and 4-10 against the spread. A disastrous 2-5 start derailed any hope of returning to the playoffs and led to the firing of Brad Childress in a season that started with incredibly high expectations. While Minnesota’s defense has held up over the 14 game nightmare, its vaunted offense never came close to matching its performance of last season.

Philadelphia, on the other hand, is flying high coming into this game after last week’s miraculous comeback at the New Meadowlands. The Eagles beat the Giants last week 38-31 by erasing a 21-point deficit with less than eight minutes left to play and then won the game on a 65-yard DeSean Jackson punt return with no time left on the clock. The dramatic victory as a three-point road underdog left Philadelphia at 10-4 SU (7-7 ATS) on the year and one win away from clinching its division. While Jackson is the one left basking in the spotlight, the real credit for this win goes to the spectacular play of QB Michael Vick. Once again he combined his arm and his legs to engineer one of the greatest comebacks in team, if not league history.

Vick remains the one intangible that makes the Eagles as dangerous as any other team in the league. For 52 minutes the Giants dominated the game in every phase, but it only took Vick, with help from players like Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and Brett Celek, eight minutes to even the score.

Minnesota is 1-3 ATS in its last four games on the road and 2-5 ATS in its last seven games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in six of its last 10 games.
Philadelphia is 3-1 ATS in its last four home games and 4-2 ATS in its last six games overall. The total has gone ‘over’ in nine of its last 10 games.
Head-to-head, the Eagles have won the last five games both SU and ATS including a 26-14 win in the 2008 playoffs as a three-point road favorite.

Momentum and motivation clearly favors Philadelphia in this game as it still has a shot at securing the second seed in the conference, if it wins out and Chicago trips up in one of its final two games. Count on the Eagles playing a full 60 minutes in this one to win and cover the 14-point spread.

The Pick: Philadelphia -14 and OVER
